This bacteria is resistant to other types of antibiotics than -lactam antibiotics, what to do?

Resistant germs: As you probably saw in the news this week - germs are getting smarter and smarter. Germs in China were found resistant to colistin, one of our last lines of defense against bacterial infection. If you have questions about the sensitivity profile of a germ, show it to an ID doc -they should understand how best to treat you factoring in things such as type of infection, patient allergies, SEs etc. ...Read more

My doctor has me on doxycycline and cefixime simultaneously to treat lyme disease. Much literature and theory suggests that lactams combined with bacteriostatic tetracyclines are antagonistic. Is this true for the lyme spirochetes?

Should be OK but...: While theoretically doxycycline could interfere with cefixime, there is evidence they work well together in the real world. See

Can I get list of antibiotics by strength?

Can I get list of antibiotics by strength?

List of Antibiotics: you can get lists of antibiotics readily available from many sources on the Internet. Strength of an antibiotic is a rather subjective thing as it depends on which bacteria you are trying to treat. For example, Penicillin is very effective for Strep Throat but will not treat most skin infections. This doesn't make it any weaker an antibiotic that Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) which would treat both. Just different. ...Read more

Beta streptococcus group b 10.000 to 100.000/ml in urine test -it is need to be treat with antibiotic?

See below: It may indicate that you have a uti. Usually positive urine cultures have greater than 100, 000 cfu/ml but repeated urines with the same organism in lower numbers are significant. If you have symptoms of a UTI or if you have a significant number of wbc's in your urine you would probably benefit from a course of antibiotic treatment. ...Read more

I've had an ingrown toenail for around 5-6 months and am still on a waiting list, I'm taking antibiotics and cleaning it, could I still lose whole toe?

I've had an ingrown toenail for around 5-6 months and am still on a waiting list, I'm taking antibiotics and cleaning it, could I still lose whole toe?

Infected or not?: This depends if the ingrown nail is causing an infection (redness, pain, swelling, pus, increase in skin temperature). If you are relatively healthy and have an infection, this would probably not lead to needing an amputation, however, if you have diabetes or are immune compromised, then you need to take care of this immediately. In my opinion any bacterial infection should be treated promptly. ...Read more

My widal test report is s.to 1:320 s.th 1:160 ah1:80 bh1:40 I am taking medicine: antibiotic mycin 500. What will this do?

Unclear question: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. The information you provided does not seem to add up and hence it is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.
Practice safe sex, if you have sex. ...Read more

If antibiotics weren't invented until 1940's, how could a person survive septicemia before that time?

They didn't: Real "septicemia" nowadays is bacteria actively multiplying in the bloodstream. This is fatal without an antibiotic. However, a positive blood culture may also be due to contamination or to transient bacteremia which you may get when you pass stool or brush your teeth hard, or in milder infections. Before antibiotics, there was no way to be sure you were really dealing with sepsis / septicemia. ...Read more

Can antibiotics ever be needed for a cold?

Can antibiotics ever be needed for a cold?

No: If it's truly just a cold, the answer is no. It's a viral illness, and won't respond to antibiotics. You can sometimes go on to develop bronchitis or sinusitis, but studies show that antibiotics are of no benefit for acute bronchitis, and should only be used for sinusitis when it persists for a long time. Antibiotics are recommended for strep throat, but most sore throats aren't strep throats. ...Read more
