I read on the internet that caffeine can trigger panic attacks, is this true? Also what is the best way to cut out caffeinated drinks?
If you are caffeine: Sensitive, then it is possible for caffeine to trigger a panic attack. It is not however very common at the usual doses that people drink. If however you also have generalized anxiety disorder which is a condition of chronic worry about the future and where you do a lot of "what if" thinking, then the caffeine can raise the level of generalized anxiety disorder to a point where it would eventually cross a threshold and panic sets in. That is the most common scenario that i see clinically.Since stopping caffeine suddenly can cause quite miserable headaches that last for approximately one week, i usually recommend that people cut down on the caffeine gradually by eliminating one drink every three or four days until gone.Best wishes and i hope this helps. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
