Even antidepressants can worsen depression or cause fatigue etc. Sadly, this is seen as a tolerable side effect by many drug companies. Yes, but they are...: Yes, but they are not a cure all. Most studies recommend a combination of medication & psychotherapy. Since I am a psychologist, unless the depression is very severe & the person is suicidal or the anxiety is debilitating, i start with psychotherapy & refer for medication if it is needed later. Both Potentially: Lexapro (escitalopram) and zoloft are similar medications and have both been shown to be helpful for panic, anxiety, and depression. There is probably a decreased percentage of side effects with lexapro (escitalopram), (escitalopram) so it might be preferable for that reason. However, plenty of people do well with either medicine, and I have had some patients do well with zoloft after not getting benefit with lexapro (escitalopram). ...Read more

Rediagnosis: First, there are several medical causes for anxiety symptoms. These must t be ruled out at this time. Endocrine diseases are suspect, as are vitamin deficiency, limbic epilepsy. Or brain diseases. If you are over 55, other medical illnesses could be at play. Depending on which medications you tried, cyp450 hypermetabolizer status could also explain lack of ssri et al effects. ...Read more
