Comments: The anatomy involves trigeminal nerve, but the cause may be complex. There is a sensory trigeminal neuropathy which could do this, but one might consider problems in jaw or mouth as a provocateur. Some intracranial situations should be excluded via MRI. A neurologist or a dentist could be a starting point. ...Read more
Not sure: In general, swelling of a body part is NOT a neurological syndrome. There are few conditions like CRPS that are neurological and can cause swelling. A sudden swollen upper lip may have non-neurological causes like allergy, acute reaction, or other. You should have it checked out just to be sure. ...Read more
See primary care: Headache and face pain arise from sets of nerves that are different from the nerves that give body pain and numbness of hands. Sometimes with my periods I get migraine symptoms without the pain. Could bilateral tingling in the chin and lower lip be a symptom of that?
Prodrome, aura: In general, any prodrome or aura and the migraine pain can be associated with menses (catamenial migraine). If the symptoms you describe on the chin and lower lip have occurred before as an aura or prodrome, then certainly that's a possibility; however, if these are new, you should be seen by your health care provider to ensure nothing else is going on. ...Read more
I have Herpes Type II. For a month now Ive had tingling & burning sensation & lip quivering on my upper lip but no cold sore has appeared. Ive taken valacyclovir 1 g for 14 days but has not relieved symptoms Am I having an outbreak? Or something else
Not herpes: First, let's be clear on terminology. It's HSV2, not II (roman numerals). HSV2 is the virus, not the disease. Genital herpes can be caused by either HSV1 or 2, but HSV2 infrequently infects the mouth -- i.e. most people with genital HSV2 never get cold sores from it. Herpes doesn't cause "tingling and burning" without visible sores, and non-improvement on valacyclovir confirms it's not herpes. ...Read more

Past 2 months pain in left side of head base neck. Now I have random pain and numbness/tingling in arms and legs. What's wrong? Symptoms mimic MS
Explanation: Although MS can be a tough diagnosis due to vague symptoms, I would doubt your problems are caused by MS. Suggest you have an MRI of your neck, as that is most likely the anatomic location for your issues. Your head/neck pain could be c/w Occipital Neuralgia, and could consider problems in arms/legs due to peripheral neuropathy if neck films are benign. ...Read more
