Difficult to say for: sure without an exam. It could be toxic synovitis which is caused by a virus, but also could be a bacterial infection or other serious issue. So, please see your doctor/have the child seen by a doctor, either the primary care doctor, or an orthopedist or the emergency room. ...Read more

Varies : It varies somewhat, based upon the specific cause. It might be reasonable to ice it down and rest it, if it does resolved over 3-5 days it probably was a minor injury. If it does not get better, or worsens at any point, I would not hesitate to be seen for it. ...Read more

Exam + bloodwork: There are so many possible causes for limp in a child. This depends on how long, the kind of limping and what else is going on (fever, pain, rash, history of trauma/ sports). It would be good idea for you to bring him in and discuss with his pediatrician and have him evaluated with a good exam and bloodwork - possibly testing blood count, infection, lyme disease, and rheumatologic markers. ...Read more

You need to see your family doctor or an orthopedic surgeon for more evaluation. These could include a labral tear or developmental abnormality of the hip joint. Continuing to exercise until you've been evaluated might cause more damage. Try anti-inflammatories in the meantime. ...Read more
