Are splinter looking brown lines under fingernails something to worry about? There aren't any other symptoms present.

Trauma vs infection: The most common cause of splinter like hemorrhages seen through the nail in the ail bed, come from trauma. I've had them in the past from tapping my nails on the desk. I had to break the habit. Splinter hemorrhages as signs of infection are more often seen at the base of the nail near the cuticle. Again, the most common cause of these hemorrhages is trauma, even as minor as tapping your nail.

6 months: A fingernail will grow out completely in 6 months. So you might see clear nail coming out from the cuticle in a few more weeks. You might have a chronic paronychia which can be treated by a dermatologist. If it is BLACK see a dermatologist now.

Is it safe to remove moles with your fingernails? My sister (almost 17) does it and a non birthmark mole she removed turned a light brown color.

Don't pick at moles: Injury to a mole can make the mole change and changing moles need to be excised. You need to let your sister know this as well so that both of you don't pick at moles.

I have a brown vertical line on my left thumb and a lunula on my left index finger. What do these mean? My right fingernails are perfectly normal.

I have a brown vertical line on my left thumb and a lunula on my left index finger. What do these mean? My right fingernails are perfectly normal.

Many things: The line is likely a melanoncyhia which can be normal particularly in african/african american descent. It can also represent infections, trauma, or inflammatory problems. Remember a lunula is a normal part of nail anatomy. If it's abnormally large, it may be a Terry's nail (though this tends to affect multiple nails) or just a variant of normal. Seek help from your doctor for more feedback.

Fingernail Facts: Commonly, when fingernails are painted for prolonged periods they can become infected with a fungus due to trapped moisture and poor air circulation. If the discoloration doesn't resolve after unpainted nails for 1-2 weeks, a culture or biopsy of the nail may be helpful to determine the issue. Staining is also common in some cases, and may resolve with buffing the nail surface.

Melanonychia: Melanonychia is a brown-to-black line within the nail, frequently seen in patients with darker skin and often on multiple nails. It can be seen in certain syndromes or due to medications. Rarely, it can be a melanoma of the nail and so needs evaluation by a dermatologist. Probably not the nail changes of anemia or alopecia which are usually not brown lines.

I have a light colored brown vertical line on my index finger and middle fingernail on my left hand. I used to have a habit of biting my nail and peeling off layers from my nails, could this be a result? I hope this isn't anything too serious! Thanks so m

So do I!: So do I on my index finger! This is completely benign (not a health problem at all) and has nothing to do with your previous biting habits. Think of it like a freckle or a discolored hair. It is made the same way by the nail cells right at the quick. They put dark pigment (melanin) into their growing nail and it extends as the nail grows. Think of it as just making you more unique and special!
