Cancer (Definition)

Cancer is a group of diseases that is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth leading to invasion of surrounding tissues that spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more

What should I expect for small cell lung cancer metastasized to the brain twice. I have been treated with gamma knife as well as whole brain radiation?

Watch out: The chance of further brain metastases is very high. You should have an MRI of the brain at least every other month, if not every month. Better to catch these tumors small when they can be treated with radiosurgery instead of more whole brain.

Good luck, . ...Read more

What is the life expectancy of someone with lung cancer and metastasis?

What is the life expectancy of someone with lung cancer and metastasis?

Lung Cancer Spread: The life expectancy of a patient with lung cancer metastasis depends on a number of factors. Most important is the location of the metastasis. Lymph node disease can sometimes be cured. Those patients with isolated metastasis to the brain or to the adrenal gland have a much more favorable prognosis than patients with widespread disease. Average survival for stage IV disease is about 8 months. ...Read more

My husband was diagnosed with lung cancer with metastatic to the brain, now there's a bleed on the brain what is his life expectancy?

Bad disease: Metastatic lung Cancer is a very bad cancer. An average patient can be expected to live between 4-12 months depending on how many sites of spread (besides the brain) he has and how mnay tumor nodules show up in his Brain scans. Patients with multiple brain metastases do poorly and may have even a shorter survival, sometimes just a few weeks unless his tumors shrink with the treatments offered to ...Read more

Patient with stage 4 lung cancer with brain metastasis is having very bloody urine. What does this mean?

Patient with stage 4 lung cancer with brain metastasis is having very bloody urine. What does this mean?

Many things: Stage IV lung cancer with bloody urine can mean many things. It could be due to the presence of a metastatic tumor in the bladder or the kidney. Please also note whether or not you are on a blood thinner. In uncommon case, it could also indicate the presence of a primary bladder tumor (though I doubt in this case). Bladder inflammation or infection could also be the cause. Check with your doctor. ...Read more

Generally, how long would stage II lung cancer take to metastasize in a 70 year old woman?

No telling: You are asking how long it will take metastases to appear if you were diagnosed with stage ii and treated with the hope of cure. I can tell you that if you are disease-free in 5 years, you probably have a cure. I am also assuming this is non-small-cell carcinoma. I hope that rather than calculate odds, you will cherish each day, and resolve to live fully whether you have much or little time. ...Read more

Life expectancy for lung cancer gone to brain. Pet scan shows no other cancer now, only 1 tumor on brain. Surgery and whole brsin radiation will be?

"oligometastatic": Patients with a single brain tumor as the only site of metastatic disease are called "oligometastatic." the chance of cure, though small, is real. Every cancer specialist has a few such patients. I would strongly recommend aggressive treatment, including either radiosurgery (cyberknife, gammaknife, etc.) to the brain or surgical resection, and again stereotactic or chemoradiation to the lung. ...Read more

Depends on the stage: Depends on the stage of cancer, the biology, overall health condition of patients. Nowadays treatment of lung cancer is personalized based on the stage and biology of cancer. In a study, overall survival in stage IV non small cell lung cancer- is approximately 15 months. ...Read more

Does surgery improve life expectancy for patients with stage 3 lung cancer?

If so, not much: Albain et al tried to show that surgery improved survival in operable iiia, but there was no statistical benefit. The subset that got just a lobe removed possible benefited, but would need a larger study to prove. Those that had the entire lung removed actually faired worse. For most patients, it is not the thing that makes a difference, but response to chemo/rt signals benefit. ...Read more

Women with lung cancer have a greater life expectancy than men with with lung cancer. Every case is different. Dx 8 mos ago stg4 lung cancer what is life expectancy from here dr stopped chemo not working, cancer grew spread. Clinical trial now. On o2 sob cough?

Ask your doctor: Lung cancer usually shortens the life of the patient. If as you say the cancer is spreading and you've moved to an unproven clinical trial regimen, it depends on the effectiveness of the drugs and your health. Response is variable. I hope you are able to speak with your close friends and family members about your wishes for those times when you cannot speak. Sob on oxygen, that may be soon. ...Read more

Lung (Definition)

Deoxygenated blood enters the lungs from the right side of the heart and travels to the lungs. When you inspire, oxygen flows into the lungs, transverses the capilliares and attaches to hemoglobin down a gradient. At the same time, co2 diffuses into the capilaries and is expelled with exhalation. Oxygen rich blood then flows to the left side of the heart and into the ...Read more
