Life After Colostomy Reversal
What is surgery for colostomy reversal called? Is surgery to reverse a colostomy called colostomy reversal surgery?
Does an abscess at the point of hookup of an ileostomy reversal usually mean a permanent colostomy?
Not always: I assume you mean an ileostomy that was taken down and reanastomosed. An abscess that appears within the first 10 days usually occurs from a leak. If the location is favorable, many abscesses can be drained through the skin using x-ray guidance thus avoiding the need for another operation and a colostomy.See 2 more doctor answers
What do you suggest if my dad has a loop colostomy, and is hoping to reverse it. How easy or hard is the reversal procedure?
Very simple: Various procedures are used to divert the bowel, in particular when a low surgical resection of the sigmoid colon is performed. Here the anastomosis is given a chance to heal by diverting food from the suture line. Loop colostomy has an opening on top of the loop which is repaired, the adjacent tissue opened so that the closed bowel can be dropped into the abdomen.

My father has a loop colostomy, and is hoping to reverse it. How difficult is the reversal procedure?
Simple: The loop is performed proximal to an anastomosis to allow it to heal. At the time of closure the proximal and distal parts of the opened loop are divided and at skin level the margins are anastomosed and then droped back into the now open loop site which is then closed at fascial and skin levels.
I had a colostomy reversal about 9 years ago after my appendix ruptured and have now started getting pains like a tightening, contracting type below?
Possible adhesions: People who have had abdominal surgery can develop scar tissue inside. These usually look like spider webs and can be attached to the bowel and inside abdominal wall or other intra-abdominal tissue. These can cause mild to significant pain. However, there are other potential causes. It would be most appropriate to have this problem evaluated by a physician.
Not to worry: If there is no history of ulcerative colitis in the past there is no reason to believe a reversal procedure will precipitate one. If you did not have ulcerative colitis before surgery you don't have to worry about it after.

Does a person of the age of 50 with a colostomy bag for over 13 years qualify for a reversal surgery. Her large intestines were removed because palips?
Depends: Most of the time when a temporary colostomy is done anorectal area will be intact, if that is the case could be reversed, some times due to disease process anorectal part of colon is removed then can not be reversed. Consult your surgeon after evaluation will tell you if it could be reversed or not, .See 1 more doctor answer
My 5 month old had colostomy reversal 2 weeks ago he is having some blood in his stool is this normal?
Just had a colostomy reversal and bleeding from the stoma incision, just came home from hospital yesterday?
Probably: Just a seroma but since the wound is a contaminated wound due to the presence of the stoma before, the risk of infection is considerable. I usually don't close these wound to avoid an infection and let them heal themselves. If the drainage continues or get cloudy or thick, redness around wound you need to go promptly back to your surgeon for a wound check.See 1 more doctor answer
I recently had reversal of colostomy and am experiencing right side stab like pain, I have Crohn's could it be muscular or scar tissue?
Yes or others: This very well could be scar tissue but it could also be an abscess or small leak. You should discuss with your surgeon asap and schedule an evaluation.
Surgeon did a "scope" test recently for colostomy removal/reversal. Will this test reveal any signs of diverticulitis? I know it shows pollyps etc.
