Confused by prescription terms qid, qd, qhs, etc. Are there official guidelines for pharmacists for writing instructions on the labels on bottles? Any website?

Not for patients: Any good pharmacy would never write the abbreviated doctor shorthand on the bottle of medication you get. If you are unsure of anything, have them relabel the bottle in words that you can understand. If you are asking before the prescription is filled and you want to know, consult a pharmacy or medical shorthand manual on latin prescription abbreviations. ...Read more

Clarifying allergy ALL NSAIDs, need safe topical. Some natural ings act as NSAIDs. Is Topricin safe? Ingredients on topricin.com, tab in prod desc.

Depends: Since you did not mention nasal or sinus polyps, I presume that you do not have Aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease in which patients would react to all NSAIDs except Celebrex (celecoxib). There has been no study on whether topical NSAIDs would trigger systemic symptoms and thus the answer is unknown. It appears to me that you need a good neurologic and orthopedic evaluation. ...Read more

Is the federal drug administration fda guilty of neglect for all these antiinglammatory drugs?

All relative: Compared to other products that fda is not doing much to control, i would say people who worry about anti-inflammatories are barking up the wrong tree. Have you looked at the wild claims herbal supplements make on rows upon rows of store shelves recently? There are all kinds of joint, sex, brain, liver health promoting products. Are they as safe as anti-inflammatories? Fda has no data and no idea. ...Read more

I'm on the following medications: crestor (rosuvastatin) norvase prestiva (sp). Are these safe together?

See your doctor: Do you mean Darunavir (Prezista)? Although in one study, lipid effects did not change over a few weeks of adding Darunavir to rosuvastatin (crestor), the FDA has released a warning about several statins in combination with protease inhibitors, including an increased risk of rhabdomyolysis. I would discuss your options in detail with your doctor! ...Read more

Dr. Thomas, why have so many patients been reviewing and reporting that switching from brand name Lexapro (escitalopram) to generic has caused adverse reactions?

Well...: In theory, there should be no difference in efficacy or adverse reactions between Lexapro (escitalopram) & generic lexapro (escitalopram). However, it is possible to have a reaction to the inert substances used in the formulation of generic lexapro (escitalopram). Taking cymbalta, lyrica, (pregabalin) dilaudid and oxycontin for avn and peripheral neuropathy any ideas on drug changes or resistances?Thank you in advance.

Taking cymbalta, lyrica, (pregabalin) dilaudid and oxycontin for avn and peripheral neuropathy any ideas on drug changes or resistances?Thank you in advance.

See neurologist.: I recommend that you have to cut back on the Oxycontin and Dilaudid because they are not just addictive but eventually you need to use more to achieve the degree of pain control you have. The Cymbalta and Lyrica (pregabalin) have been used a lot for chronic pain which is also experienced in pn. I would suggest that you consider other pain control besides the opiates for a long term basis through a pain clinic. ...Read more

Prescribed both Ativan 1mg twice daily, and a long acting Hydrocodone (Hysingla ER 20mg). I've read combining these can cause problems. Safe?

Probably safe: Combining benzodiazepines (like Ativan) and opioids (like hydrocodone) can lead to respiratory depression, meaning you don't want to breathe. That can be dangerous. But at those low doses, and esp if you take the hydrocodone in the morning, it should be safe to use at those doses. When are you going to stop taking those medications? ...Read more
