Can i take Xanax (alprazolam) for alcohol withdrawal?

Can i take Xanax (alprazolam) for alcohol withdrawal?

Not recommended: The best thing is to seek help for alcohol withdrawal, which can be dangerous. Check with your doctor and get her/his recommendations for withdrawal treatment. Xanax (alprazolam) doesn't last as long in the body as valium or librium, and there could be a risk of seizures if it wears off and the alcohol withdrawal breaks through. Don't try this at home! ...Read more

My fiancee is taking librium for his alcohol withdrawls, how can he wean himself off of it?

My fiancee is taking librium for his alcohol withdrawls, how can he wean himself off of it?

Not by himself: If he is using Librium i hope it is being prescribed by a health professional knowledgeable with addiction and withdrawals. If he is getting it some other way this is dangerous, being on Librium too long will create its own addiction to librium. Other non addictive medications may be part of the plan but again doing it on his own is not recommended. ...Read more

Meds for alcohol: There are good meds for alcohol treatment but needs to talk to a good doc specialized in the field, not a matter of few lines in this website. Needs strong will to resolve the problem as it can destroy life (physically and mentally) and lives of your loved ones. It is powerfully inherited, any siblings and younger generations that drink need be treated also. It comes with mental problems. Rx all! ...Read more

Hello Which of the two Librium or Diazapan would you recommend for a Alcohol Detox ?

Hello Which of the two Librium or Diazapan would you recommend for a Alcohol Detox ?

Librium: See the following: http://www.bjmp.org/content/benzodiazepines-revisited Time to peak concentration is related to a drug's ability to produce euphoria, and therefore create dependence. Librium would therefore be my preference. For cases of hepatic impairment, lorazepam is often chosen. Ultimately, either are effective for this indication. ...Read more

My dr placed me on librium for 10 days for alcohol withdrawal. How long do withdrawal symptoms last? Will i be ok after the 10 days i hope?

Yes: Alcohol withdrawal can often last up to 7 days after the last drink. So, after 10 days you should be ok. Note though that this is if you 100% abstain from any alcohol at all, even a sip. Also, taking alcohol and a benzodiazepene like Librium is extremely dangerous as it significantly raises your risk of seizure. Good luck on kicking the habit. ...Read more

Been on librium 50 mgs a day one month now 25 mgs daily for a month. I only have 25's. Can i wean with that? Or what would be a better plan?Coldturkey

Go see your doctor: See prescribing physician who prescribed librium. Find out why it was prescribed and what is expected duration. Did it take of an acute issue or is it intended for a chronic condition? If latter, then you shouldn't come off it. Bottom line, address your concerns w/your prescribing physician (and keep your family doc in loop if not same person). ...Read more

I need chlorasepate again to help me wean off alcohol . I've had a prescription but it ran out and I can't quit without it.

Chlordiazepoxide: Is a long acting benzodiazepine (Librium). Using this medication to wean of alcohol is a common use, but in an outpatient setting is rare. I would call the physician who prescribed this, and ask what titration course was intended for you. Abrupt cessation of this medication could cause significant withdrawal symptoms. If you cannot contact your prescribing physician, go to an ER for care. ...Read more

I have had chronic hives for 2 years. I also drank a lot. I am weaning off alcohol and seeing no problems- but hives worse- nothing helps?

Chronic Urticaria: Studies show avoidance of stressors, alcohol, NSAIDs and your allergy trigger can all decrease chronic urticaria. Studies show levocetirizine is first line drug. Add hydroxyzine at night to sleep. See a Rheumatology expert to identify your allergy trigger with panel test if possible. You should get a NE Allergy panel. Studies show urticarial vasculitis and other DDx need to be considered.Good luck ...Read more
