I am down to 5mg of lexapro (escitalopram). How should I quit from this dosage? I was on 20mg and have been cutting back for weeks.

Hello. : Hello. It is safe to stop once tapered down to 5 mg of lexapro (escitalopram). However, the concern is that normally tapering a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor is done under a medical provider's supervision. I am wondering why you haven't asked your provider. ...Read more

Is it normal for anxiety to increase when upping the dosage of lexapro (escitalopram)? If so, how long could that last?

Is it normal for anxiety to increase when upping the dosage of lexapro (escitalopram)? If so, how long could that last?

Yes: This is a common reaction and the duration should not be too long (perhaps a few weeks at most - hopefully less) but each person is different. If otherwise you are pleased w/ the effects, try to bear it. If it's too bad or too long - ask for alternatives. Don't just stop! Work closely during this stage and consider adding CBT therapy to optimize the benefits! ...Read more

I take Lexapro (escitalopram) 20 1x a day along with ativan 1mg a day. Can i stop by immediately or do I need to gradually reduce dosage before stopping?

Under physician care: Never stop an antidepressant without the blessings of your prescribing doctor. Lorazepam if taken for more than 2 months should be tapered down to 05 mg a day for 2-4 weeks before it is stopped. Stopping an antidepressant for depression: if you've had one episode risk for recurrence is 50% over 15 years, 2 episodes and risk is 70 %, 3 episodes in 90% risk of relapse, at which point most stay on. ...Read more

Having severe gad. Taking 10mg of lexapro (escitalopram) 4 a couple months. Not helping, should I switch medication or increase dosage with dr approval, of course?

Having severe gad. Taking 10mg of lexapro (escitalopram) 4 a couple months. Not helping, should I switch medication or increase dosage with dr approval, of course?

CBT Therapy: All research agrees that therapy optimizes the effects of medication. For some it allows you to cut dosage or stop earlier. Do discuss this all w/ your Dr (very wise of you!) but I see little reason to think that a higher dose will impact severe GAD w/o Tx. You need to learn skills to avoid, reduce and manage anxiety. Best! ...Read more

Has anyone noticed a big difference in increasing Lexapro (escitalopram) dosage to control anxiety?

Maybe, maybe nothing: Some people use a daily dose of as high as 30mg/day to have adequate response. With higher dose, you may experience some nausea/jitteriness, headaches, somnolence, irritabilty, cramping/diarrhea etc...Or you may not have any at all. If it is recommended by your doc to do so, follow your doc advice. I would not do it if u were not advised such. Consult doc. Good luck. ...Read more

How do I know if Lexapro (escitalopram) is working? Been 6 weeks now. Should i generally just feel "happier" or just "not depressed/anxious"? Whats the highest dosage?

How do I know if Lexapro (escitalopram) is working? Been 6 weeks now. Should i generally just feel "happier" or just "not depressed/anxious"? Whats the highest dosage?

Feel like yourself: As with any antidepressant, goal isn't just to make your feel "not depressed/anxious" but rather to make you feel as good as you should (clinically, we're trying to help you achieve euthymia). Think of response (50% better), remission (all better) & recovery (remission x 6mo). Relapse occurs between remission & recovery while recurrence (hopefully never) comes after recovery. http://goo.gl/xkifby. ...Read more

1st day upping dosage on Lexapro (escitalopram) and have thrown up, had racing heart, and mood changes. Would upping dosage cause this?

Possibly: Those are severe symptoms you are describing there and not very common with patients going through Lexapro (escitalopram) dosage changes although more mild versions of those side effects are seen more typically. As always, if you are having severe symptoms any kind consider getting checked out in a emergency department as it is not always clear what is going on! ...Read more

Had no libido when on 10mg of lexapro (escitalopram). Doc recently upped dosage to 20mg due to brain fog rearing its ugly head again. Libido back. Make any sense?

Yes, makes sense: Yes, feeling better when your Lexapro (escitalopram) dose was raised makes sense -- your symptoms of brain fog and lack of libido could have been from depression, which Lexapro (escitalopram) helps to treat. This goes to show that when prescribed in the right way for the right people, Lexapro (escitalopram) can be helpful -- and isn't all bad! glad you're feeling better. You can carry this even further with psychotherapy. Be well. ...Read more

Since lexapro dosage has been increased, I've had increased anxiety, feeling overall horrible, and eye twitching. Could it be serotonin syndrome?

Maybe, but: it sounds like side effects of the medication if everything else has been eliminated. Make an appointment with your prescribing MD right away. If you can't do that, go to an Urgent Care facility, and as a last resort, leave a message with your MD telling him/her your symptoms and ask that s/he leave you voice mail instructions in the interim. ...Read more

Took 5mg lexapro (escitalopram) for 3 weeks, Dr upped dose to 10mg a week ago. Should I wait 4-6 weeks on the 10mg to see results or is it 4-6 wks altogether?

Ask the Dr: But you can also ask yourself. If at 6 wks you are not liking what you see, going longer only increases the length of time to taper off. If you are pretty pleased but hope for more, you might wait another week or so - but not if you're not happy. Discuss this sort of thing w/ Dr and in therapy. Best! ...Read more
