My Grandmother has been diagnosed with the early stages of Dementia. Is this disease hereditary and if not, what can I do to prevent it?

Incomplete data: Research seems to suggest a genetic contribution but it is of uncertain strength and not to a single or even simple set of genes. Living longer has increased the numbers of people who decline cognitively but causes differ. Some are gradual and easier to deal w/. Some rapid and frightening. Healthy living in all respects is the best prevention-like strategy, but no one knows. If we did, Wow! ...Read more

Does someone know details about Lewy body dementia? Is it hereditary. Do other family members need checking?

Brain degeneration: The late life dementias are often characterized by the names of the proteins that accumulate. Lewy body dementia is also known as a synucleinopathy because the protein that builds up is called synuclein. When synuclein forms clumps, those clumps are called lewy bodies. There is no genetic test for lewy body disease. The cause is unknown. Lewy bodies in the brainstem cause parkinson's. ...Read more

What predisposes someone to Lewy body dementia?

Lewy Body risk: We don't have a clear answer for this yet. About 10% of cases are a familial variant and are directly inherited from one parent. The rest may be related to a combination of genes and environmental factors. But the main associated brain change (presence of clumps of alpha-synuclein protein) are also seen in other types of dementia, and so the underlying cause may be similar. ...Read more

Is there any treatment or cure for Lewy body dementia?

Symptomatic therapy: Just like many other causes of primary dementias, there is no definitive therapy or cure. However, some medications like donepezil and rivastigmine can help with the memory loss by slowing down the rate of progression of symptoms and allowing patients to maintain certain level of cognitive function for a longer period of time. Lewy body dementia - does anyone know of any treatment for this disease?

Few options: There are currently no fda-approved treatments specific for lewy body dementia (dlb). But given the severe cholinergic losses that occur in dlb, the frequent co-occurrence of alzheimer's disease pathology, and several small trials that suggest their effectiveness, cholinesterase inhibitors are the off-label treatment of choice. Exelon (rivastigmine) patch has shown some effectiveness for the cognitive decline. ...Read more

Bp of 82/60 in an 88 year old male. With Lewy body dementia and a pulmonary embolisim. How dangerous is the low BP?

Up fluid intake.: Fluid intake is always important, especially in seniors. This is likely the best thing to do here as anything invasive might make things worse. This man is very old and needs to be treated gently. If he is on an iv, he can get fluids that way. If blood pressure gets lower it would be wise to get to the hospital. Best of luck. ...Read more

Dad with parkinsons/lewy body dementia. Was eating on own, sitting in wheelchair, etc.3 days ago stopped eating, sleeping constant, in bed. Ideas?

I'm sorry about Dad: I trust that you and dad's physicians have discussed his wishes when he can no longer speak for himself. If he has an advance directive, it must be respected. Otherwise, if it is right to look for a cause (vascular, medication effect, metabolic problem), go ahead. It's clear you loved your dad enough to ask us. Many parents are not so fortunate. My husband has Lewy body dementia. He is on Aricept 23 and namenda for many years. The new doctor advises trying exelon (rivastigmine). I am afraid to change. Is one better than the other?

Perhaps: The fda has approved Exelon (rivastigmine) for use in parkinsonian dementia, which is very similar to "lewy body dementia", and the difference is very subtle. Aricept has never shown significant benefit consistently in research studies on lewy body and is not my preferred agent either. Namenda has shown poor results for the most part also. Would definitely heed your doc's advice. ...Read more
