No: As long as you stay consistent with your medication. That is to say, the brand synthroid may not be bioequivacle to the generic levothyroxine, so it is not recommended to take one one month, than switch to the other, etc. Stick with one specific medication, take is regularly as prescribed approximately the same time each day and get your TSH levels followed as per your doctor and you should be ok. ...Read more
Moderate : The pill strength of levothyroxine goes from25 mcg to 200mcg. However we do have patients that need more. We don't so much view a dose as high or low rather what your particular body needs to restore normal levels. These levels and doses for some remain constant and for others change at times upward and downward. ...Read more

Pharmacist: I believe you can, but the cutting has to be precisely in half as it's important to get the exact amount of a medication like levothyroxine. Your pharmacist can advise you on most of your questions about your medications and the proper way to take them, however. You could ask him/her if taking the full dose every other day would be effective instead of a half tablet daily. ...Read more

I take 100 mcg levothyroxine once a day and I think I accidentally took another dose should I be worried will this hurt me please advise?
Don't worry: You'll be fine. Levothyroxine is slow in onset and long lasting. In fact, for occasional people with compliance issues, we will give one week's worth of levothyroxine all at once (eg. 700 mg once per week). It is possible you may feel a "buzz" today (palpitations, tremor) but probably not, unless it is from anxiety over it. You can skip tomorrow's dose. ...Read more

I have accidently been taking a double dose of levothyroxine for 2 weeks or more. I normally have 100mg but have been taking 200mg. I am worried.
You'll be ok: I would think you would be feeling the double dose: palpitations, nervous, tremor, irritable. I would recommend that you stop entirely for 2 days and then start back on the correct dose. If you are in otherwise good health, the temporary high dose will not have long term effects. ...Read more
Levothyroxine stops working after 2 months, until dose is increased. Had 4 dose increases over a year. Why does it work for a while then stop?
Thyroid failure: The most common cause of hypothyroidism in an adult is hashimoto's thyroiditis. This is a progressive destruction of the thyroid over months to years. So a dose of thyroid hormone that works now, may not be enough a year from now if the thyroid has less function. Eventually, you will be on a stable dose of thyroid hormone when the output of thyroid hormone from the thyroid ceases. ...Read more

I've been on the same dose of Levothyroxine for 3 years (0.75mcg) & free t4 has always been normal (1.6). Recently, my FT4 was elevated (2.30) Why???
Unsure: If someone has changed the way they take their thyroid medications - if you were taking w/ food and now on empty stomach, if there is a new batch of thyroid meds there can be some variation in potency, less fiber in your diet, lab error, stopping eating soy, herbal supplements, stopping antidepressants or cholesterol meds, taking steroids or being sick --- these can all effect FT4 and TSH levels ...Read more

I took a benedryl than without thinking took my next days dose of meds. 12 hours since dose 25 mg atenolol, 25 mg hydrodiazide, .125 mg levothyroxine?
Unwise but: Although it is unwise to take a higher dose of prescribed medications, i presume the peak drug levels in your blood have passed by now. Thus no permanent damage is expected. Be sure to resume taking the next doses of medications on the scheduled day. This means that if you had taken the extra dose 12 hrs after the last dose, you should wait 36 hours before taking the next dose. ...Read more
How high a dose is 75 mcg of levothyroxine? How often should blood be checked for hypothyroidism?
Modest dose: That is a modest dose for an adult with hypothyroidism. Doses vary from patient to patient, and thus so does the need to check dose. A minimum would be once a year, but when initiating treatment, if weight changes significantly, if adding other medications, etc - all these things could alter your needed dose. Best to confer with your doctor/endocrinologist to find the perfect dose for you. ...Read more
