Monitoring Centers: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells/digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph everywhere for bad stuff like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts. They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react. They shrink when all is well. ...Read more
US detected 33 mm enlarged node in submandibular, 5 days later MRI of neck just detected 6mm enlarged node in submental!which one is more reliable?
They both: should be reliable. A lymph node has three dimensions, and some protocols are based on measuring the shortest dimension(short axis diameter), while others may measure the node in the longest dimension(long axis diameter). So you may be getting different(yet accurate) measurements of the same node. Or they could be different lymph nodes. Talk to your doctor, the 2 studies need to be correlated. ...Read more

Non tender, painless, hard, multiple, larger than 1.6 CM swollen cervical lymph nodes for 2.5 years. Most likely cancerous in terms of probability?
A recent CT w+w/o contrast show right inguinal lymph nodes one 2.6x1.9 and less pronounced left inguinal lymph nodes though largest 1.4 cm ?.
Size alone: is not a reliable indicator of whether or not a lymph node is pathologic. The overall shape/morphology is also important. Lymph nodes of that size in the inguinal areas, if they have normal morphology, may be nothing to worry about. Talk to your doc about what the results mean in your particular case. ...Read more
Can reactive neck lymph nodes feel more oval than round? Have a lymph node that I think feels about 2cm x 1cm in size (feels much longer than wide).

Chronically generalized swollen lymph nodes for three years. All less than - 1.5 cm. & all moveable. No growth or change. Cancer?
Worried of lymphoma 9months palpable lymphnodes in anterior triangle both sides of neck none more than 4mm ovoid thin hypoechoic one occipital 9x6x3mm?
Need a biopsy: Unfortunately, the presence of lymph nodes themselves tells u only that there's a problem. It could be a (viral) infection, but u r right to b worried about lymphoma. The symptoms of viruses & lymphoma overlap (wt loss, fever, not feeling well). Some lymphomas r caused by viruses. The quickest way to know is to biopsy 1 of the glands; it should be EZ, TTY surgeon. Procedure is relatively pain-free ...Read more

Have bilateral, enlarged (approx 2cm) but soft submandibular lymph nodes. Unchanged for approx 7-8 months. No constitutional symptoms. Worrisome?
Reactive: The vast majority of swollen lymph nodes "react" to viral infections. This is their job description. They enlarge to help fight the infection. Can lymph nodes stay swollen for 7 months after mono infection. Lymph nodes are bilateral in post. cervical area 1.3 cm or less. I touch them everyday?
Yes, not abnormal: Once inflamed and enlarged, sometimes lymph nodes never return to previous normal size. If you're otherwise well, it doesn't mean anything if you can still feel them. Anyway, repeated touching -- especially if you poke hard to find them, rub them, etc -- can cause further inflammation, keeping them large. I suggest you vow to keep your hands off for the next month. You may they find they're gone. ...Read more
Hard immovable painless occipital lymph node no bigger than 0.5 cm, noticed 5 weeks ago. Can this be cancerous?
Not really: 0.5 cm nodal lesion is about 1/4 inch. Most of the pathologic lymph nodes don't appear in the occipital region which drains the back of the scalp. they appear along the jugular chain usually not as a single small nodule. This could be lipoma, fibroma, neuroma. If it enlarges and is very firm, then a bx would be performed. Otherwise warm soaks to the area could resolve the problem. ...Read more
