I have multiple myeloma and am enduring chemotherapy with a new drug (to the nhs) revlimid (lenalidomide). Are there any drug/supplements to harness my immune sys?
Follow MDs advice: Lenalidomide is an immunomodulatory drug (imid), so it is "harnessing your immune system". I would re-word the question as what drugs should I take to optimize my myeloma treatment? Lenalidomide (revlimid) is a very effective drug alone or with other drugs. Myeloma patients are at high risk of infection with or without therapy. Anti-viral drugs (acyclovir, valacyclovir) can reduce risk of shingles. ...Read more
Depends on insurance: Revlimid (lenalidomide) as one of cancer therapy -is not a low cost medicine. It is approximately in the range of 3000-4000 dollars/month. However, depending on your insurance- the copay would be variable. Also, if you are eligible/qualified, you can also ask the manifacturing company -i.e.-celgene- for patient assistance program. Progression of MM: Based on Some studies, serum levels of VEGF are elevated in MM and and also dependent on severity of MM. It depends...: Revlimid (lenalidomide) is an important treatment for myelodysplastic syndromes. Not treating these syndromes may be more dangerous than being on revlimid (lenalidomide). That said, i would be particulary concerned about blood clot formation. Both a. Fib and Revlimid (lenalidomide) increase your tendency to form blood clots in your heart. Talk to your doc about whether or not you need to be on anticoagulants w/ revlimid (lenalidomide). ...Read more

Only shot form flu: Patients on Revlimid (lenalidomide) cannot receive the nasal spray form of flu vaccine because this is a "live" attenuated form of the flu. They can receive the shot form of flu vaccine because it contains only a particle of the actual flu virus and cannot, therefore, give them the illness. They would be wise, in fact, to get the flu shot since influenza can make them very, very sick. ...Read more

My copd doc wants me to have a pnemonia shot and I am on 10 mg revlimid for multiple myloma what now?
Make a call: Nothing in the Revlimid product information provided to physicians lists a contraindication for this shot. If your immune system is weakened you may not achieve as much benefit as others but it can help. It is always a good idea to coordinate the different treatments between the physicians you use, so a call to your oncologists office to notify them of this recommendation would be in order. ...Read more
