My husband had knee surgery 5 days ago. He has fluid under his knee cap. Tonight, the other leg/ankle is swelling badly. Should he be seen at ER?
Maybe: No info about husband's age, medical problems, type of surgery, etc. The fluid under knee cap is probably not of concern UNLESS the skin over it has become red, hot, swollen, and very tender, or if fever. The OTHER leg being swollen is more concerning. If he has any calf or leg tenderness on that side, please go to ER right away to make sure no blood clot. Good luck! ...Read more

Keep your legs elevated as much as possible and avoid salt as best you can to accelerate recovery. If it doesn't work, you may need a stronger med. ...Read more

Not debatable...: Whether or not you presently have these symptoms are had them in the past, an obvious concern is a possible blood clot. This dangerous condition can happen without a clear history of trauma, prolonged inactivity or for that matter, without any apparent reason at all. Regardless of the actual cause, the goal now is to have it evaluated immediately. Untreated, a DVT can have catastrophic effects. ...Read more

Hard to be certain..: It's asking a lot of us online to come up with an answer. Lots of questions and an exam needed to try. If the pain and swelling is localized to a joint, e.g., your ankle, then you may want to ask if you were tested for different kinds of arthritis, e.g., lyme, rheumatoid, other infection, or gout. Not sure what else to offer. Good luck. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
