NSAID: An NSAID (like ibuprofen, naproxen, or high dose aspirin) will help the pain. If you're on an anticoagulant ("blood thinner"), this will increase the risk of bleeding but can still be used if you're not having bleeding problems. (and I would let your doc know what you're doing and why).

I have had knee pain only at night when I try to lay on my side and lay the inner part of my knee on the mattress. The only way I can sleep is turning on my opposite side and keeping the painful leg off the mattress.?

Hamstring tendinitis: While there may be many causes of this pain, two very common sources is hamstring tendinitis that occurs from limping. The limping is often caused by weakness of the quad muscles, but can also be caused by knee problems such as arthritis. If you have had a fall recently, the cause can also be an mcl tear. To isolate the problem, a trip to your friendly neighborhood orthopedist may be helpful.

Evaluate arthritis: There are a few possibilities however it is likely that the unoperated leg was compensating. This increased load of work may have led to you developing early arthritis or hamstring tightness. This spasm due to the leg length discrepancy may be causing the night pain. You should have an evaluation with Ortho, get a heel lift and start physical therapy. Keep me posted.

Severe knee pain bend, walk, stairs, etc. MRI 5 yrs ago partial tear of ACL & cyst. Now radiates in calf/down leg; wakes @ night; ankle fract May '13?

Get examined!: Your symptoms suggest patellofemoral (kneecap) pain. Your 'cyst' may be causing the pain in the back of your knee (popliteal/ Bakers' cyst). Not sure if your 'partial' ACL injury is causing symptoms or not without a thorough examination (it can cause cysts in the knee joint occasssionally.) See a board certified ORS. Best of Luck!

Need evaluation: There are many different possibilities as to the source of the pain. It could be due to a pinched nerve from the lumbar spine, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, hip disorder, muscle strain, or many other causes. Discuss first with your primary care physician to initiate the work up (physical exam/xrays) and if the pain persists/progresses a referral to a spine specialist may be necessary.

I have a lot of leg and knee pain everyday, could I have leg cancer or a blood clot?

It could be less: To worry about: chronic muscle fatigue, arthritis, gout, rheumatoid, sciatica/ nerve impingement - have a physician check you out and mention your concerns to be sure they know about those as well.

Cauda Equina: Inability to urinate is an emergency. I would make sure you don't have what is called cauda equina syndrome. Unfortunately this requires surgery to correct. Ofetn times the nerves are just bruised abit and the signals aren't being sent quick enough, you may need an epidural steroid injection to relieve this irritation. Either way, I would see a pain/spine specialist to evaluate your options.

Recommend: Medical assessment to include history & physical examination at a minimum. One cause might be sciatica. Once the cause is found - a treatment plan can be developed.

Knee pain down the outside of their leg?

Knee pain down the outside of their leg?

May be from back: Pain that follows this pattern may be coming from the spine, especially if it radiates bellow the knee. Your doctor will need more history and a physical exam to know where the pain is coming from for sure. There are other things that can cause this pattern of pain as well.

Which medical conditions cause severe leg/knee pain?

Which medical conditions cause severe leg/knee pain?

Different causes: The first challenge is to identify why your knee is painful. Common causes include arthritis, tears of the meniscal cartilage, chondromalacia of the patella, or loose bodies within the knee joint. See your doctor or get an orthopaedic surgeon to evaluate and get help with treatment.
