Went in for followup u/s for left thyroid nodule. Came back as nothing on left but new nodule on right. Worried they got the sides mixed up. Possible?
Not likely: Ultrasound exams are performed by trained technicians and supervised by physicians on site, so a mix up is unlikely. It is, however, common for many people to have multinodular goiter, meaning many cysts on both sides of the gland. These are usually benign & require no further evaluation. I have stable, dominant 10 mm left thyroid nodule with possible internal microcalcifications. What does it mean ? Do I need thyroid scan ?
Thyroidologist: Usually, in women especially multiple thyroid nodules are all benign. However,that being said, if there's any doubt a needle biopsy is the diagnostic procedure of choice. I feel that an endocrinologist or preferably a thyroidologist is best qualified to evaluate, treat and follow you. Thyroid scans or ultrasounds alone don't usually settle the problem in my experience. ...Read more

Thyroid nodules: Most nodules less than 1 cm are not concerning and can be monitored with periodic ultrasounds. Some features such as calcification may heighten concern. Much more information is necessary in your situation. Is there family history of thyroid cancer, personal history of hyper or hypothyroidism, and radiation exposure? You need to discuss this with an endocrinologist and arrange a treatment plan. ...Read more
First, the nodule: Requires work up. It may or may not be causing more thyroid hormone release. If your thyroid levels are elevated (tsh can be low just from early pregnancy, don't go just on that), then an uptake scan to see metabolism in the nodule needs to get done. They may be holding off b/c of early pregnancy. May benefit from metoprolol for tachycardia, may need biopsy to determine cause. Follow w/doc. ...Read more
