S/he should have warned you about post-op pain as well as potential complications. Not normally: A hiatal hernia can caused referred pain to the left shoulder rarely but not normally to the right shoulder. One way it could cause some referred pain would be if the hiatal hernia is causing so much irritation to your diaphragm that its spasming on the right, which could lend itself to some referred pain, but this is not very common. Could be worriesome: Are you having any nausea or vomiting? Any areas of the abdomen bulging out again? It could be that you just "tweaked" scar tissue from the sneezing and that no damage was done. Doubtful: While it is possible, it doesn't sound like that type of pain. Ilioinguinal nerve is also well away from the space where a laparoscopic inguinal hernia is. It could come in to play however if a tack was placed too deeply at the upper outer edge of the mesh. See your surgeon to find out if its bad enough. Call your surgeon: Depends on location of the hernia and technique of repair and mesh fixation. For some ventral hernias, it would not be uncommon to have muscle spasms and pain at 4 weeks after surgery, but only your surgeon can sort this out best.
