What is a cervical conization?

What is a cervical conization?

Remove precancerous: Cervical conization is a surgery to remove a section of the cervix when there are pre-cancerous cells. This can usually be done in the office, and recovery is not too uncomfortable. Extra repeat pap smears should still be done to make sure all pre-cancerous cells are gone and don't return. Can still have kids after, but cervix can be weak or scarred, so will need special attention when pregnant. ...Read more

Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (Definition)

This is a procedure done to remove a part of the cervix that is abnormal. Pts have leeps once they have had an abnormal pap smear and further evaluation warranted a leep to remove tissue off the cervix. This is both a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure. Its cuts the bad part out and it helps heal whatever other tissue is affected by ...Read more

What can I expect from cervical conization?

Easy procedure: A cold cone biopsy of the cervix is a quick procedure & usually done in the or in case heavy bleeding is encountered. Either a general anesthetic, IV sedation, or a local injection can be used. I prefer a combination of the later two and my patients do very well. They rarely feel any pain & appreciate the short nap. ...Read more

Cervical conization risks while pregnant?

Pregnancy: Miscarriage could occur if early in pregnancy. Preterm labor/delivery or cervical weakening could occur if later. Would advise discussing with a gyn oncologist and hi risk ob--if cancer risk is high that may outweigh pregnancy risks. ...Read more

Anyone who has has cervical conization done have a fullterm baby?

Pregnancy: Many women who have had cervical cones have had healthy term infants. You should have close evaluation of the length of the cervix early in 2nd trimester to determine if cervical insufficiency (weakening/shortening) has occurred. If so there are treatments available to extend your pregnancy if intervention is early. ...Read more

Cervical conization- what can I expect? Will I be out?

Discuss with doctor : Cold knife conization is a procedure in which a cone shaped biopsy of the cervix is removed to treat cervical dysplasia. No overnight stay is required unless complications arise. You will be put under general anesthesia and the surgery lasts approximately 30 minutes. Your total recovery time varies from 1-2 weeks. The cervix, however, usually takes 4-6 weeks to heal completely. ...Read more

Cervical conization while pregnant - do doctors do that, or is it dangerous?

Cervical conization while pregnant - do doctors do that, or is it dangerous?

Rarely: One would need to have advanced cervical dysplasia with the worry of possible invasive cervical cancer to warrant a conization during pregnancy. Complications would include excessive bleeding, infection, and loss of enough cervical tissue to risk preterm labor. In 30 years I have done two of these and none in the past 15 years. ...Read more

What is a leep conization and who in nyc would be best to get a second opinion?

What is a leep conization and who in nyc would be best to get a second opinion?

Cervix biopsy: Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (leep) is a low risk way of removing dysplastic (precancerous) cells/tissue from the cervix. It's an office procedure with local anesthesia to treat high grade (cin ii or iii, cis, or hgsil) lesions seen on colposcopy. A second opinion from any gyn or gyn onc would be appropriate if needed. Your doc should be able to give you all the information you need. ...Read more

I was diagnosed with HPV over twenty years ago & had a leep conization preformed do I still have the virus & can I give it to someone?

2 schools of thought: There are two schools of thought in regards to hpv. One school believes that your immune system "contains" the virus and as such you may have no symptoms. But, if things change, the virus can "temporarily escape" and you become infectious. Another school of thought is the belief that the virus can be completely iradicated from the body. I believe the first school personally. ...Read more

I was diagnosed with HPV over twenty years ago & had a leep conization preformed do I still have the virus & can I give it to someone, can I pass it?

Depends on…: Whether conization eliminated all of virus. Was follow-up done to check for presence of more virus? If no virus present, u can't pass what doesn't exist. If any virus still present, then it can be passed. Virus can also exist in mouth, throat, anus—areas that also need to be checked. ...Read more

Need docs with expeirence on cervical leep procedure? What's it like?

Its ok: LEEPs are tolerated very well in the office. Your doctor will use a speculum just as they did with the pap smear. They will clean and numb the cervix with anesthetic which will cause a little pinching. You may have some cramping during the procedure. It is a relatively short procedure, lasting about 5 minutes. ...Read more

Hidden cervix after leep difficult to do smear test?

Hidden cervix after leep difficult to do smear test?

Sometimes: Many things can make doing a pap smear difficult. If the uterus is severely tilted, displaced, or removed (partial or supra cervical hysterectomy); visualizing the cervix may be difficult. Relaxed vaginal walls, scarred or shortened cervix, or even body size are more common reasons for a "hidden" cervix. Most gyns know the tricks to find the cervix, just find one more stubborn than your cervix! ...Read more

Hidden cervix after leep difficult to do smear test. What can I do?

Hidden cervix after leep difficult to do smear test. What can I do?

Short Cervix: After a leep procedure, it is not unusual to have a shortened cervix that may be challenging for your doctor to evaluate. Unfortunately, how your body responds to the surgery is something that you may not have control of. If your pap smear has inadequate cells because of stenosis (closed cervix), some hormonal cream may be applied to facilitate the opening of the cervix. ...Read more

What causes shooting type feeling in the cervix 3 months after a leep for CIN 2&3 :)?

Maybe surgical pain : Remember, You had a piece of your cervix cut out with your leep procedure. You may feel pain for some time after that procedure as your cervix heals. Could continuos colposcopies every year, or getting a leep be more harmful to the cervix?

Leep: Colposcopy is simply looking at the cervix under magnification. Leep is a procedure to remove cervical tissue where the abnormal cells grow. Colposcopy is usually recommended when the pap results are abnormal- often in conjunction with biopsy. Leep is usually recommended when the pap shows hgsil or the biopsy shows moderate or severe precancer of the cervix. ...Read more

I was diagnosed with cinll from an ecc and my leep came back with no dysplasia. Does this mean that it has resolved, or she might not have gone deep enough in cervix to remove?

Could be both: It could be both of your answers. Mild dysplasia (CIN I) has been known to spontaneously reverse the process and become normal epithelium again. It could also be that the initial pap/biopsy was incorrect prior to the LEEP procedure. It would still be a good idea to return for frequent pap smears and followup within 6 months to be certain of the absence of recurrent CIN.(dysplasia) ...Read more

What can cause cervical pain during sex a year after a leep surgery? Is this normal?

What can cause cervical pain during sex a year after a leep surgery? Is this normal?

Position/pelvic: Certainly get a GYN/ pelvic examination. The cervix can be irritated by deep penetration of a large penis. I would suggest ample foreplay, lubrication, position changes and avoiding any sexual manipulation/penetration,which feels uncomfortable. It is unusual to actually have cervix pain during intercourse, since the cervix is quite posterior in most women. Please see a GYN. ...Read more

I have severe cervix pain during and between periods. I had a leep in jan. 2012. Should i be worried about anything?

Probably not : Pain from the cervix is not common after a leep procedure. If you are experiencing pain you should see your doctor to determine why. Also be sure to see your physician for follow up pap tests to be sure they are normal and there has not been recurrence of the dysplasia. ...Read more

I have high grade cervical dysplasia. I already had a leep procedure done, it went away, and came back. How will a second leep effect me?

What did your doc sa: It depends obviously if the doc can get it all out with clean margins, if they can then you will need to be followed, assuming you want to preserve your fertilty, if u do not want to preserve your fertily u can get a robotic hysterectomy, and if you were my pt since u have recurrent dysplasia i would refer you to a gyn cancer surgeon as that doc will be better trained than a regular gyn for you. ...Read more

6th pregnancy, i had a leep procedure done a year ago will i be at higher risk of cervical problems? X

Yes, but not neccess: Yes, having had a leep procedure puts you only at 'slightly' higher risk, not by any means definitely. Plenty of women every year have successful term pregnancies following a leep procedure. Thousands! you might have your doctor check the length of your cervix early on, say, between 12-14 weeks, and then again 16-18 weeks. Keeping a close eye on it may help ease your fears. Best wishes. ...Read more

Having my 3rd leep in 10 years for recurring hsil cervical polyps (1st leep was for mild). Should i be concerned? Should i look into a hysterectomy?

Surgical Risk?: In general, hysterectomy is much more invasive and puts a patient at significantly greater risk than a leep. Further, hysterectomy should only be used when a leep is insufficient, i.e. Positive margins. I do understand the frustration/anxiety entailed by recurrent hsil though -- hysterectomy may be reasonable if your gyn can perform a lower risk procedure, like a laparoscopic or vaginal surgery. ...Read more
