Stomach flu: Sounds like stomach flu (vomiting + diarrhea). Trying sips of water instead of drinking much fluids at a time may be helpful. Avoid solids for now. ?diverticulitis: Diverticulitis commonly causes left lower abdominal pain, sometimes exacerbated/relieved by a bowel movement. Inflammatory colitises can cause symptoms. Constipation. I have not produced a bowel movement in 39 days. Xrays and cts came back showing impaction but nothing serious. I've tried, meds, drinks, enemas etc.

Shouldn't be...: You may have some constipation, which is much more common than folks think. Even if you're having a bowel movement a day, you can be constipated (the colon can expand and stretch a lot). If you have fever, blood in the stool, see a doctor. Otherwise take a softener like colace (docusate sodium) at least once a day. Do not take laxatives. Drink water! you should see a difference in a few days. ...Read more

Clarification: Hello. If he is doing a digital (gloved finger) evaluation - that is likely to be a rectal examination. Stool can be checked for blood. Could be serious: Gall bladder problems can have this pain pattern, but the fact that it happened after a BM, especially if you strained at all, could also mean that some air/gas has escaped and is under the diaphragm. Anytime i eat spicy food or even mildly spicy food soon after I have severe back pain until i make a bowel movement, and that doesn't always cure it.
GERD or GB: Spicy foods are usually fatty, such as pizza, chili, tacos, etc. Gallbladder pain frequently is felt in the back, sometimes as the only source of pain. Ruq pain is also associated. Reflux causes esophagus irritation, and although it's most commonly felt in the substernal area, it can be associated with back pain. Chronic constipation: Sounds like you are chronically constipated, given the meds you are on. Constipation can be from diet, meds, anatomical, neurological causes.
