Hdl (Definition)

HDL, or high density lipoprotein, is a molecule in the body that is responsible for the transport of lipids (fats) from various organs including blood vessels back to the liver for processing and possible elimination. Because it helps prevent accumulation of lipids in blood vessels, HDL cholesterol is ...Read more

Something isn't: adding up. Perhaps typo...your ID info says age 76, not 16. Total cholesterol is given in mg/dl (370 IS high), but other values in mmol/l. However LDL of 7.36 mmol/l (284 mg/dl) is QUITE high, too. Unfortunately your 1.16 mmol/l (44 mg/dl) HDL isn't very far into the protective range. Ratio is high. Notes say you have had heart stent so cholesterol needs to be much lower;need meds. Review with Doc ...Read more

My total cholesterol is 149 my HDL is 42 and my LDL is 92 & my ratio is 3.5 is all lipid panel normal, high or low?

My total cholesterol is 149 my HDL is 42 and my LDL is 92 & my ratio is 3.5 is all lipid panel normal, high or low?

Likely normal: If you don't have any other risk factors, this is a good panel. If you are diabetic or already have coronary disease, then your LDL should be <70 to be in the lowest risk group. ...Read more

Total cholesterol is 232..Ldl direct is 150..Tc/hdl cholesterol ratio is 5.4...Do i need medication or is it normal?

Total cholesterol is 232..Ldl direct is 150..Tc/hdl cholesterol ratio is 5.4...Do i need medication or is it normal?

Depends on Particles: More than cholesterol, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is related to the number of LDL (LDL-P) and HDL particles (HDL-P). Because cholesterol in LDL and HDL particles is highly variable cholesterol levels often disagree with particle number. When cholesterol and particle number disagree CVD risk tracks with high LDL-P and/or low HDL-P, not LDL-C or HDL-C. Talk to your doctor about next steps. ...Read more

Some risk: Aside from family history the biggest risk factors are male age 45 or over(female 55 or over), smoking cigarettes, hypertension and HDL less than 40. Your low HDL and elevated triglycerides suggests that you need to reduce your weight and increase exercise: this will help to raise HDL and reduce tryglycerides. How normal is it to have higher HDL than ldl?

How normal is it to have higher HDL than ldl?

Abnormal -> Careful: Ldl particles, expressed as a concentration in nmol/l essentially always higher than HDL particle concentrations, expressed ┬Ámol/l. However, what is commonly promoted are estimations of cholesterol fat molecules associated beta-lipoproteins (ldl) or with alpha-lipoproteins (hdl). Theses value are not the correct issue & often misleading but promoted as cheaper way to estimate lipoprotein particles. ...Read more
