Laxative Before Colonoscopy
Normal: This is likely due top the fact that you had a good bowel prep. I do not know your eating habits, but likely you have constipation. Should the laxatives be taken one day before colonoscopy or on the same day a few hours before the start of the procedure ?
24 Hour Prep: Your GI specialist is supposed to provide you a sheet with instructions to clean your bowel. You need to avoid any solid foods for 24 hours before the procedure. During this time you need to take laxatives till your bowel movements are entirely liquid and free of any residual fecal matter. Drink plenty of liquids during this time, to avoid dehydration. Good luck!. ...Read more

Two days fasting / preparing before colonoscopy/endoscopy and now three days constipated. What should I do? Should i take laxative?
Not sure: Your colon was likely cleaned out completely for the procedure. Not going to the bathroom is not really constipation as its defined by hard bowel movement with lots of straining involved. Unless you have abd pain or distention i wouldnt be too worried about it. Try some prune juice and if that doesnt help you can try over the counter miralax (polyethylene glycol). If you have hist of constip start taking a stool softe. ...Read more

I just had a colonoscopy this morning and they found melanosis coli. I look up =abusive use with laxatives.I do not use laxatives. What else causes?
Melanosis coli: If the diagnosis is correct is caused by cascara segrada an ingredient in many over the counter laxatives, softeners and herbal remedies. It causes deposits of pigment in the mucosal cells giving a black or leopard skin appearance to the colon lining instead of the natural pink appearance, it does not pose any medical risk but it does make diagnosis of colon pathology somewhat difficult. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
It is 20 hours before my colonoscopy and I still have two rounds of laxative prep to do. Will it hurt me to have a bowl of ice cream or a candy bar?
Doing colonoscopy prep. On second laxative and all that comes out is a bit of yellowish solid that falls to the bottom of the toilet. Was liquid before. What is it?
Stool: It must have been some of your stool which finally migrated all the way down to your anus and out of your body. Your gastroenterologist appreciates that in that he will be able to have a clear view of your entire colon because you did such a good bowel prep and he will not have to clean you out from the rear end, so to speak. ...Read more
Can any doc explain if you get sick from the colonoscopy preparation like drinking the laxative and golightly liquid?
Colonoscopy showed twisted colon due to small bodyframe & not enough room for it. Dr. said take laxatives or remove 6" of colon. Which treatment best?
Testing for colon cancer? Are there any tests besides the colonoscopy? I really don’t want to have to use those colon cleaning laxatives. I had to once before and felt really sick from them. Isn’t there another test?
There : There are actually two separate questions here. The first is whether there area alternative tests besides colonoscopy. There are other tests; but each one has limits. Testing stool for blood can identify cancers; but is not a good preventative test. The real goal is to find polyps before they become malignant. Work is underway on tests that try to analyze dna found in stool to look for markers of abnormal growths. It is an exciting area; but the current tests are not accurate enough and far too expensive. The alternative to colonoscopy that is designed to find polyps without insertion of a colonoscope is ct colography or "virtual colonoscopy". However, it also requires a preparation; and is both more uncomfortable and less accurate than the colonoscopy. The second question you asked deals with the preparation itself. Talk to your physician. There are several newer preparations that entail much smaller volumes of preparation liquid over longer times than we used to use in the past. Most people find it easy and very tolerable. I know i did for my exams. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can I prep for a colonoscopy with a salt water flush instead of the doctor recommended laxatives?
Hi, I have abused laxatives. (stimulant type). Will my doc know from a colonoscopy? Does this abuse cause Crohn's disease or result in stoma.
Been on one day of liquids for colonoscopy, starting second day. Haven't taken laxatives yet but noticed last formed stool was green. Why might this be? Should I inform doctor/emergency? Deeper green color.
Not concerning.: Stool color can vary because of a lot of factors, most notably diet. It is generally not a concern unless the store is bloody or solid black in color, due to bleeding, and will eventually return to normal. Green stool is not usually a concern. Be sure to drink all of your prep. Good luck. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
