Can acute late stage Lyme disease get misdiagnosed with among other things as dissociative identity disorder (traumatic past)?
Lyme affects brain: Acute lyme is recent onset. Late stage lyme often includes neuroborreliosis, lyme infecting the brain. This can manifest as a variety of psychiatric symptoms. Those with past trauma will have a harder time healing from this if they have neuro lyme. Few with lyme have diss. Identity disorder- if they do, address not just lyme but history of trauma. Possibly, not likely: Amyloidosis is a disease that occurs when abnormal substances called amyloid proteins build up in your organs. It is believed that a contributor to alzheimer's disease is the buildup of beta-amyloid. These would be 2 different situations --- amyloidosis effecting the brain & alzheimer's. Unfortunately you could still be dealing with a dementia in either case. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can menopause trigger autoimmune disorders? I was diagnosed with both psoriatic arthritis and celiac disease at 51.
Maybe: There is more autoimmune (AI) disease in older women, but it is unclear if it is related to time or hormones. Time: an AI condition is a problem in the immune system. The longer we live, the more likely a problem will develop. Hormones: women have an immune system that tolerates foreign things, that is how they have a baby. If that tolerance goes away, then there can be an issue. But exact cause? ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I doubt it: With ulcerative colitis you really need to be having diarrhea with blood in it. Most lyme disease doesn't do this. I think the main connection would be fever and joint pain, which you can see with both. But I would imagine that UC would not commonly be mistaken for lyme disease. ...Read more
How is Meningitis from Lyme disease diagnosed? Already have the lyme diagnosis? Past ER note says "likely Lyme Meningitis" but no inflammation on MRI.
Lumbar puncture: Meningitis is diagnosed classically by sending off cerebrospinal fluid analysis from a lumber puncture when there is a clinical suspicion that a patient has this condition. Lyme meningitis can be diagnosed with specialized testing sent on cerebral spinal fluid often in conjunction with serum testing to confirm the presence of Lyme Disease. ...Read more
Similar symptoms: Lyme disease and chronic fatigue syndrome can have very similar symptoms. By definition, if one has chronic fatigue syndrome other causes of fatigue like lyme disease have been ruled out, so if one has lyme disease, by definition they do no have cfs. However, it is likely that many people who have been diagnosed with cfs actually have undiagnosed lyme disease. See comment for more:. ...Read more

How does cfs relate to other illnesses such as fibromyalgia, multiple chemical sensitivities, gulf war syndrome, neurally mediated hypotension, Lyme disease, and candida?
Simply put...: The underlying theme describes a constellation of signs and symptoms that we have absolutely no clear, concise idea how it biologically works, how to effectively treat it, and how to address its neuro-psychiatric effects, unfortunately, it is this ambiguity that is being exploited by some quacks, to spread misinformation about each of the diagnoses mentioned (and it's not exhaustive). ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
P-Anca positive, negative MPO??? Wegener's vasculitis suspected due to clinical symptoms. 6 yr old with juvenile arthritis.
Autoimmune: The positive ANCA test supports the diagnosis of an autoimmune disorder but with a negative MPO test (of one the proteins in the neurophils targeted by the disease) the possible diagnoses are many including Wegener's, RA, and others. Further testing including a biopsy may be required. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Diagnosed at 29 with severe osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. Lyrica (pregabalin) 150 bid. Think I have autoimmune disorder, and possible cidp. Is this possible?
Absolutely: It would seem unusual to have a 29 yo with severe osteoarthritis and so you definitely could have more of an inflammatory arthritis, many of which fall in the category of autoimmune disorders. A more detailed history, exam, and appropriate test can usually establish the diagnosis. Thank you for you question. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers
