Give it time: The infection inside the tooth was cleared out by the root canal process, but there may be residual infection in the tissue surrounding the tooth. Now that the source of the infection has been removed, the body should fight off any remainder and over the space of a couple of weeks the parulis should disappear. Its shrinkage is a positive sign. ...Read more

Superfast healing: The real question is what not to do that slows down healing. Avoid using alcohol, peroxide, hibiclens, betadine, and bleach solutions. Inflammation (red, hot, swollen, tender) is important to healing so anti-inflammatories (motrin, advil) are bad. Cover the area with a clean dressing changed every other day and protected from trauma. Antibiotics do not help healing unless it is truly infected. ...Read more

I had a cyst lanced 2 days ago, I have had several done in the past. It now looks black, I have never had another one look this. Is it normal?
Minor surgery: Usually a topical anesthetic followup by a local. Then the area is opened and the fluid within it is drained to remove some of the bacteria and decrease the inflammation. The area is dressed and usually compresses are used at home to continue the drainage. Sometimes an oral antibiotic is prescribed. Some physicians pack the wound although I no longer do this. ...Read more
Spider bites: These are seldom (actually rarely) spider bites. They are almost always due to staph aureus skin infection (these days mrsa). They will often resolve with incision and drainage alone, but sometimes may require a course of antibiotics if they recur or the infection appears to be spreading. ...Read more

Risk vs benefit: This is a provocative and good question. Both athletes competed in sports that were massively corrupted by illegal drugs. About one million americans will try steroids this year; of those to whom I've spoken, all have been sorry. Most will escape the grave health effects, but the changes in mood can damage relationships or far worse. And who likes a cheater / lawbreaker with tiny testicles? ...Read more
Could you tell me if steroids are so bad how come people lance armstrong and schwarzenegger look okay?
In perspective: Some people say that up to one million people in the us will use Anabolic steroids to enhance muscle growth this year. Most will not ruin their health by doing so. It is cheating, it is illegal (i think it's a good law), and they can make you go nuts. This said, i'd rather my own son use a steroid under close supervision than take up smoking or give up exercising in favor of drinking beer. ...Read more

I got an abscess lanced. I went for a wound check up and they decided not to repack it and I'll just pull some out each day and cut it is that normal?
Heat and antibiotics:
A boil is a collection of bacteria and white blood cells, that increases in size so it may rupture and spread. Draining it, placing a drain in some patients, heat, and an antibiotic if it is a large abscess are often prescribed.
It is essential NOT to squeeze boils, which makes them dramatically worse!
Squeezing pushes the pus deeper into tissues, makes a minor pimple into ad serious abscess ...Read more

Depend on how done: If just lanced, stabbed 2 drain, it may reseal the wound & remain or progress. If cut open and a rrain inserted it may clear in 1-2 wks with proper antibiotics. If unroofed or the top layer of skin over the boil it needs daily or more frequent dressing changes of packing, and heal from the bottom up. This is the surest way of no recurrence &takes longer depending on how wide & deep the boil is. ...Read more

Doctor can recheck: If a skin boil or abscess got lanced, but later is still firm and tender, or firm and warm and reddish, it usually means there is still infection and pus under the skin. That means going back to the doctor for a recheck and maybe a reopening to get any pus out and maybe leave gauze packing in the hole so that any drainage can get out... thus lettiing the hole heal from the bottom up. ...Read more
