Lactic Acidosis
Lactic Acidosis (Overview)
Lactic acidosis is the buildup of lactic acid in the blood, either from an increase in the body's production or the kidney being unable to remove lactic acid effectively. The most common causes are intense exercise (increased production of lactic acid) or kidney failure (unable to effectively remove lactic acid from blood). Other causes include blood infections (sepsis) and inability to breathe effectively (respiratory failure).

Does food change lactic acidosis levels?
Yes: Many foods are acidic in nature and so anything acidic can make an acidosis worse. Alkaline diets (increasing avocado, kale, spinach, cucumber, celery for example) can help balance and acidic condition. Meats are very acidic, by the way. ...Read more

What causes lactic acidosis? Is it from metformin? How to avoid lactic acidosis?

Lactic acidosis: Most cases of type a lactic acidosis are due to marked tissue hypoperfusion in shock or during cardiopulmonary arrest. In type b lactic acidosis, systemic tissue hypoperfusion is not apparent. Metformin therapy for type ii diabetes can cause it, although the likelihood of this is relatively low. Risk factors for this include impaired kidney function and liver disease or concurrent alcohol abuse. ...Read more

Respiratory acidosis and metabolic acidosis, which is worse?

Worse acidosis: Both a respiratory (r) and metabolic acidosis (m) are bad. A r is due to retention of carbon dioxide (c) and a m is due to the presence of an organic acid. The treatment of a r is to reduce the c, blowing of c and the treatment of a m is to get rid of of the organic acid. ...Read more

How do we treat lactic acidosis ?
Lactic acidosis: Severe lactic acidosis (la) is often associated with poor prognosis. Recognition and correction of the underlying process is the major step in the treatment of this serious condition. Intravenous administration of sodium bicarbonate (sb) has been the mainstay in the treatment of lactic acidosis. Dialysis, peritoneal in particular, can also be used in some cases to avoid a massive sb load. ...Read more

How common is lactic acidosis with sepsis?

With septic shock: It is a marker for end organ damage due to inadequate oxygen reception or utilization. When sepsis progresses to shock we will follow lactate (its pka is 4, so its never really acid in the blood) as a marker of our success in getting blood and oxygen to the peripheral tissues. So... In sepsis itself (without shock) it is rare, but in septic shock lactate is almost always elevated. ...Read more

Why does respiratory alkalosis cause hypokalemia while metabolic acidosis causes hyperkalemia?
K and alkalosis acid: Blood K is sensitive to blood pH.( hydrogen ion concentration). When H gets too high (acidosis) it moves into cells to protect from death from too much acid.. As H+ moves into cells a + ion must move out. This is usually K+. Thus hyperK. When H+ gets too low (alkalosis) in blood H+ moves from cell to blood to prevent death from low H+.. As H+ moves out of cell K+ moves in. Thus blood K goes down. ...Read more

What is lactic acid?

Product of glucose: Metabolism. It is an intermediate in the metabolism of glucose and accumulates in the body if it cannot be completely broken down due to lack of oxygen or insulin. See this site for more info. http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/lactic-acid-blood-test. ...Read more

What causes diabetic keto acidosis?
Dka: Diabetic ketoacidosis is a condition whereby glucose which is used by cells for energy is not made available to the cells due to a lack of insulin. The lack of Insulin causes a dramatic rise in blood sugar triggering a host of meatbolic derangemants including dehydration as well as the production of ketones which are toxic as it raises the bodies acid level and will affect potassium levels. ...Read more

How are respiratory acidosis and metabolic acidosis different?

How can diabetic ketoacidosis (w/ metabolic acidosis) causes respiratory failure?
Due to acidosis.,,: The metabolic acidosis causes a respiratory compensation in an attempt by the body to keep the blood ph normal. The respiratory compensation is to increase minute ventilation (both respiratory rate and volume per breath!). So, the person with severe metabolic acidosis will be breathing fast and deeply. Doing this for an extended period of time can lead to fatigue resulting in respiratory failure. ...Read more

I'm confused, what is lactic acidosis?
Dangerous condition: The body generates energy by breaking down fat and sugar thru a very efficient mechanism that uses oxygen and produces carbon dioxide and water. When this mechanism fails, there is another inefficient back up system that generates lactic acid. Poor blood flow, low oxygen, medications, poisons, excessive exercise can cause this lactic acidosis. It should be corrected promptly. ...Read more

Can taking one Metaformin cause lactic acidosis?
Unlikely: Theoretically Metformin can cause lactic acidosis but in setting of normal kidney function it is extremely unlikely. Liver disease and concurrent alcohol use can also increase the risk. Talk to your health care provider if you have any of the above risk factors to determine the risk of lactic acidosis. ...Read more
19
Can dehydration lead to metabolic acidosis?
It usually does: The contraction of the fluid volume caused by dehydration routinely leads to a metabolic acidosis as the metabolism begins to shift to more fat breakdown & those byproducts add to the acidity of the blood.Fluid expansion through oral or IV re-hydration can correct this quickly by exposing the blood to buffer compounds in the tissues. ...Read more

Normally our body chemistry is kept in a narrow range, and in particular the amount of acid in the body is kept within a narrow range. The amount of acid is measured by a value called the ph. It is normally a value between 7.35 and 7.45, values below 7.35 are considered to be "acidotic" a patient with this value of the blood chemistry ...Read more
