Could lifting weights count as strength training, or is doing squats, crunches, kickbacks, etc strength training?
Strength training: Training your muscles for increased strength and endurance should be a gradual process to avoid injuries. Lifting your own body weight such as in pushups, pullups, squats, lunges has similar benefit for staying fit. A good healthy diet plan is a must. Avoid junk calories and focus on nutrition with veggies and fruits. Stay regular and consistent. Good luck. ...Read more
With a tailbone injury can you do strength training w weights ie squats, leg press, hip abducter and cardio - elliptical?
Varies: It varies somewhat based on the severity of the injury. If it is a fracture, you would be well suited to avoid exercises that put extra strain on that area such as seated military press, etc for 6-8 weeks. If it was more of a soft tissue injury, than basically you would just try to keep your activities to such a level that your pain is not aggravated, but could increase them as tolerated. ...Read more

Back pain: Lunges and squats really put a lot of stress on the low back. You risk converting a bulging disc into a herniated disc. Isometric exercises are better to build the core muscles. A weight lifting belt can protect the low back if you have to do the lunges and squats. Consult with a personal trainer to avoid further injury to the low back. ...Read more

Build a strong base by establishing core strength and breathing technique. Planks, birddogs, wall squats, split squats, push ups, crunches and leglifts are just a few. Left knee MRI shows I have trochlear groove arthritis. What aerobic exercises can I do? Cycling? Running? Stair climber?
Non impact ideally: Your patellofemoral joint (where the knee cap meets the trochlear groove on the femur) sees 3-6 times your body weight and this is even more with running and other high impact exercises. Ideally you should stick with non impact activities like cycling, swimming and using the elliptical. The stair climber will likely be very tough because the amount of stress it puts on the pf joint is very high. ...Read more
Do cardio walk & low impact leg exercises. After exercising i stretch my entire body for 20 minutes. Why are my hamstrings sore despite stretching?
Muscle soreness: It could be normal for the muscle to become sore when the routine changes, or the exercise is strenuous enough to cause some lactic acidosis in the muscle tissue...One needs to be sure the hamstrings are the source of pain and that the pain does not result from back problems. ...Read more
Yes: You are nicely combining three different forms of aerobic conditioning exercises. Rowing and cycling activities are heart friendly as well as joint friendly; good exercise for the cardiovascular system without beating up your joints. Of the three, the treadmill has more impact on your knees and ankles as you run. Would advise keep in the treadmill flat as opposed to inclined. Easier on the knees. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Intense ankle pain (front & lateral) prohibits climbing stairs, pivoting, running. No injury, full ROM w/o weight on it. What did/should I do? Thanks!
Ortho Eval needed: Seek evaluation by your orthopaedic surgeon. Along with a thorough examination of your ankle, X-rays would likely be obtained to assess for a potential loose body of osteophyte that may make stair climbing painful. Instability or ankle looseness would also be assessed as the anterior and lateral aspect of the ankle is where the main stabilizing ligaments are located. ...Read more

Hi there. Is vinyasa yoga more appropriate before after an intense cardio workout? (Wrestling, Mauy Thai, Jui Jitsu)
Warm up vs cool down: Active warm up is ideal prior to intense workouts. Depending upon how aggressive your yoga routine is, it might serve as warm up. With that said, cooling down is also a good idea after intense exercise too. Bottom line, there's no proof that any specific exercise routine is better than another for warm up or cool down, aside from general statements. ...Read more
Does 62yo need physical for supervised walking, stretching+strengthening (bands/free weights+plate-loaded equip), swimming, water exercise/volleyball ?
Yes: Running is an excellent exercise for building cardiovascular endurance; if you run distances you will improve your slow-twitch muscle tone and over time as you decrease body fat your muscles may appear more defined; if you focus on sprinting you will engage fast-twitch muscle and may see more of a "mass" effect; if you are trying for body-builder muscles strength training in gym is your best bet. ...Read more
