Why does my wrist make popping sounds when rotate it? I did have a bad fall and landed on my hand a couple of years ago. It also hurts ocassionly.

Post traumatic: arthritis can occur any time after an injury involving the joint. When you landed on your hand, you may have caused a tear in the cartilage. Over time, joint fluid works into the cartilage and wears it away until you have bone against bone, a torn TFC, or tiny fragments floating in the joint which can cause popping. Xray or MRI might answer the question. ...Read more

The back of my hand pops when I bend or move it. The popping isn't painful but my hand hurts most of the time. I have RA. Could this be the cause?

Classical Gas...: For the most part, popping sounds are caused by cavitating gases within the fluid inside the joints and tendons being moved over bony irregularities. As luck would have it, RA offers changes in both of these issues. People can exhibit this same popping without RA, as there are a host of other reasons for these phenomena to occur. If circumstances should change, consult with your RA specialist. ...Read more

Probably ligaments: Popping and pain in any joint usually suggests a problem with the connections between bones and bones (ligaments) and bones and muscles (tendons). Injury and overuse from job or play can irritate or injure these areas. Most of the time, rest and otc anti-inflammatories can help. Manual medicine can help. Splints can help. If continues or worsens get a good exam to calrify the problem. ...Read more

Daughters wrist swollen for 2 wks 3 days Drs said its sprain then hand & fingers swelled 2 days ago. Is this still a sprain? There's popping too.

Trauma or not?: If your daughter is 14 or less and there has been trauma, then a fracture of the wrist is much more likely than a sprain. A follow-up x-ray can be helpful in seeing a fracture at times when the first x-ray is normal. In the absence of trauma, other diagnoses must be considered such as infection or an autoimmune condition. ...Read more

I heard a loud popping sound in my right hand followed by a crack, my fingers have been numb and I can't close my hand, I was lifting something heavy.

Tendon rupture?: Given the location of pain, I would suspect a tendon rupture—palmaris longus, most likely. It is positioned directly over the median nerve (carpal tunnel nerve) and would be irritated by bleeding associated with a tendon rupture. Symptoms would likely affect the thumb through long/ring fingers. Ice/elevate, ace wrap, and consider hand surgeon evaluation if not improving. Palmaris is not important. ...Read more

Go see family doctor: You didn't describe what you were doing when this happened but assuming that you injured yourself, you need an x-ray to look for broken bone (s). At the very least, get evaluated looking for nerve damage. Otoh, many people can "crack their knuckles" w/o any pain. But if it hurts & causes numbness, it's time to get evaluated. Good luck! ...Read more
