It sounds like you had a significant hyperextension injury to your thumb and you may have torn some of the ligaments that support your thumb because of the amount of swelling and redness. Thumb is swollen without injury. It is swollen on the palm side at the tip of my finger. It is not red and doesn't really hurt. Just uncomfortable.
