Knee swelling: Knee effusion or swelling can be due to a number of causes: a proliferative (diffuse) or focal (local) synovial condition, loose bodies, meniscal tear, articular cartilage wear, and an underlying bleeding disorder; if you, indeed, are experiencing this a MRI should be ordered to rule out an internal derangement. If the ACL has poor or no blood supply why does the knee swells up so rapidly when it is torn? If it has blood supply why doesn't a partial tear heal?

If the ACL has poor or no blood supply why does the knee swells up so rapidly when it is torn? If it has blood supply why doesn't a partial tear heal?

Acl tears bleed: Anterior cruciate ligaments tears generally cause a significant hemarthrosis (blood in joint) when acutely torn. This is from the tear itself and associated injuries. Because the ligament is intraarticular it has poor helping potential when the blood supply is disrupted, unlike the medial collateral ligament (mcl). Partial (one bundle) tears have poor healing potential for same reason Read more

Very strange q. When my IBS symptoms get really bad, my left knee swells up a lil and then settles down in a day, over many years. My GI clueless?

See details: The issues would be unrelated unless the ibs was actually misdiagnosed and the GI issues are really either crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. I suspect you really have inflammatory bowel disease and not ibs. Read more

PRP: Jessica. PRP lacks convincing scientific data to permanently solve your problem. At 30 years of age you have at least 15-20 more years of being extremely active in sports. A cartilage restoration procedure is more definitive. I would strongly recommend looking into it. All the Best! Dr. Marc Milia Read more

Every time the cold weather comes my knee swells up with fluid. Why? I have a meniscus tear but in summer is doesn’t swell

Every time the cold weather comes my knee swells up with fluid. Why? I have a meniscus tear but in summer is doesn’t swell

Vaso-constriction: When it's cold, the veins and surrounding nerves constrict blood vessels in the limbs, to minimize heat loss and help keep warm the core of the body, where vital organs are. But the increased activation of these nerves around joints in response to cold weather might also lead to an increase in the pain a person feels, and cause less fluid/blood flow out of the knee-thus the increased swelling. 3 mo. Since surgery of torn meniscus. Cleared back to work as flight attendant. During flight ok, on layover knee swells up. Will this improve w/time?

Yes: At this early phase after surgery, the repeated pressure changes of going up and down in the plane can cause swelling in any surgical site. It sounds like standing and doing the work is ok, which is the good news. In time, your body will figure this out. For some, wearing a thigh high compression garment or a stretchy (neoprene) knee sleeve during flight helps. Read more

HEMOPHILIA B BOY HAS KNEE SWELLING FORONEYEAR, HAD FACTOR, DOING EXERCISE. HE DEVELOPED FEVER AFTER 2ND AND 3RD OF FACTOR INFUSION. NORMAL KNEE X-RAY.

HEMOPHILIA B BOY HAS KNEE SWELLING FORONEYEAR, HAD FACTOR, DOING EXERCISE. HE DEVELOPED FEVER AFTER 2ND AND 3RD OF FACTOR INFUSION. NORMAL KNEE X-RAY.

Still having fever?: The biggest concern would be for hemarthrosis (blood in the joint) or a bacterial infection of the knee joint. Another consideration in children is transient synovitis - pain about 6 weeks after a viral infection. Normal X-rays are reassuring, but you should discuss further factor administration. Pain medicine and splinting may help, but a blood count and inflammatory markers may be needed. Read more

Exercise and medicin: Once recovered from the hip replacement, the opposite knee should feel better. In general, for hip and knee arthritis, exercise, muscle strengthening and stretching are very important to slow the progression. Medicines like anti-inflammatories, cortisone injections and lubricant injections may decrease the pain symptoms. Weight loss helps--every 10 lbs lost decreases 70 lbs of force! Read more

Knee swelling and pain?

Knee swelling and pain?

Get it looked at: Anytime somithing inside the knee causes irritation, the knee will swell. This is called an effusion. Effusions are not normal in a normal knee. At your age the two most common causes are a meniscus tear or some early cartilage damage. If it persists, you should see a md and get weight bearing xrays and likely a mri. Read more

How can I reduce knee swelling?

How can I reduce knee swelling?

Depends: Knee swelling is a symptom of something wrong inside the knee. A cartilage tear, a ligament tear, gout or other inflammatory processes or even just osteoarthritis can be the cause of the swelling. It is important to figure out the source. A physician trained in orthopedics or sports medicine can do this by your history and then doing an exam and sometimes draining the knee or doing some bloodwork. Read more
