At your age the two most common causes are a meniscus tear or some early cartilage damage. If it persists, you should see a md and get weight bearing xrays and likely a mri. ...Read more

Achilles: Sounds like inflammation of the achilles tendon. This should improve with relative rest, ice, compression and elevation if you develop swelling. You may want to back down on the running if trying to increase mileage. Also get your shoes fitted properly at a running store that specializes in foot gear. Contusion: If this just occurred in recent days, you most likely have a contusion of the patellar tendon, infrapatellar fat pad or simply the soft tissues on the front of the knee. This tends to be a very sensitive area that is under tension when the knee bends Consider limiting painful activities, ice for 20 minutes 3-5x/day, and use ibuprofen/naproxen to relieve inflammation. Tendinitis of FDL/TA: Where I ur knee is the pain? If it is towards the bk, it sounds like u cd have strained the Flexor Digitorum Longus (FDL) tendon which runs from behind the knee to the medial (inner) part of the mid foot. If the pain is in the front, u cd have strained the tibialis anterior (TA) tendon instead, also known as "runner's knee" or "shin splints". Ice the area & rest; if not better in 2 wks, TTYD. Tendinitis: Patellar tendinitis may occur independently due to over activity, and it may also be aggravated by flat feet. If you are knocked kneed, having and arch support that is carefully measured may help reduce your patellar tendon symptoms. As an alternative or in conjunction a patellar strap (cho-pat) brace that is a larger version of a tennis elbow brace may help while correcting the arch issue. ...Read more

Meniscus tear?: Your symptoms of pain w/ squatting , twisting and turning associated w/ swelling may indicate a meniscus( cartilage) tear.The meniscus can tear as we get older w/minimal trauma as the water content diminishes and it becomes more 'brittle' and less 'elastic '.
