How to relieve knee pain after injuring and how to get up from a squatting position?

Knee: Relieving knee pain after injury is multifactorial. A proper diagnosis is necessary: acute vs. Chronic/overuse as the treatment may be entirely different. A locked knee with a torn and dislodged meniscus may require arthroscopic surgery. Anterior knee pain from going up and down stairs usually responds to physical therapy. ...Read more

What exercise modification of a free-weight squat would you prescribe for an individual who experiences knee pain when standing from or sitting in a ?

PFPS: You may have what we call patellafemoral pain syndrome. If you get checked out by ortho/sports med you may need pt. If you have pain with stairs, standing up from a seated position, squatting, kneeling all around the knee cap this seems what it could be.
Have it looked at, you want to get pt. Exercises are terminal knee extensions, one legged squats (no wts), and isometrics. Email me for details. ...Read more

Why might it be that my knee pain becomes elevated after i squat?

Why might it be that my knee pain becomes elevated after i squat?

Ugly squats hurt: Sorry, that title seems harsh, but more than likely, when one has knee pain when squatting or lunging, it is due to poor form. The exercise must be done properly, with your weight shifted to the rear of the feet. When you bend the knees, the knees should be directly above the ankles, not in front of them (or to the right or left), and do not bend the knees past 90 degrees. ...Read more

Knee pain: Knee pain can be from several sources. In someone doing heavy squats, conditions like patellar or quadriceps tendonitis is common. This would show up as front of the knee pain. I'm trying to build a stronger body. I do a lot of squatting and I have been getting knee pain. I don't like taking pills unless I can't handle the pa?

Quit squatting w/wts: Any knee pain is from what excess load is placed on the body above the knee voluntarily or otherwise. You are voluntarily lifting weights well beyond what your knees can handle & if you keep this up, you might tear, shear or sprain your knee menisci & you'll be in trouble. Also, not knowing your gait pattern, if you have residual knee pain without weights, it can be cause/effect on your lower back. ...Read more

Kneecaps & alignment: Knee pain in younger people is often due to foot, knee, and hip alignment issues. Pain when the knee is bent comes from pressure of the kneecap into the femur. An alignment evaluation, orthotics, and a specific exercise program designed by a pt for you should help. Without an injury, a meniscus problem is unlikely. ...Read more

Most : Most likely you may have some ligament sprain, but if the pain continue to bother you then you should get the knee examined by orthopedics to rule out any meniscal injury inside the knee.Sometimes while doing exercise or while playing sports our knee gets twisted and there may be a meniscus tear. Sprain should subside on its own. Other possibility is some ostoearthritis but that depends upon things like age, overweight, morning stiffness. So if the pain doesnt subside please have your primary care refer to orthopedics.Thanks. ...Read more

Knee pain squatting. Slightly squishy + swollen. Hurts swiveling not walking. Feels stiff walking. No pain resting. Thoughts?

Meniscus tear?: Your symptoms of pain w/ squatting , twisting and turning associated w/ swelling may indicate a meniscus( cartilage) tear. The meniscus can tear as we get older w/minimal trauma as the water content diminishes and it becomes more 'brittle' and less 'elastic '. See your board certified orthopedic surgeon for examination. Best of luck! ...Read more

I've been having a weird pain in my knees when rising from a deep squat. Is there an easy way to distinguish knee pain from referred hip pain?

Knee vs. hip: Hip pain is felt in the groin and buttock, and then deep in the thigh down to the knee. Getting up from a chair will cause hip pain due to increased pressure in the joint. Sitting with the knees bent for a long time (ie movie theater), knee motion, and squatting aggravates knee probs. If knees hurt but hips don't, probably knees. ...Read more

Keep up the good work!: You seem to have answered your own question. Chronic knee pain made worse with sitting is often mild to moderate arthritis. Sitting is really hard on arthritic knees because it causes pressure in one spot on the damaged cartilage. Changing the position of your knees can help. Can you adjust your workstation to stand? Lateral knee pain mostly when crossing leg. Full weight bearing/strengh (can do ATG bodyweight squats), no swelling or tenderness. Meniscus tear?

IT Band: Iliotibial Band Syndrome (IT Band) can cause pain on the lateral or outside part of the knee. Most common in runners. Common syndrome aggravated by crossing the affected leg. I would expect more swelling and tenderness with a meniscus tear. Stretching, Cold therapy, rest, and NSAIDS are helpful. Good luck ...Read more
