INFLAMMATION: This sounds like mild inflammation of the supporting muscles and tendons of the patella (kneecap). Many causes are possible:if you are exercising- remember to warm up and cool down. Certainly simple passive flexion and extension of the knee will strengthen the quadriceps and supporting ligaments. I suggest massage with biofreeze. If not improving-orthopedics. ...Read more

A few thoughts: Osteoarthritis or degenerative wear down of your cartilage is a weight bearing problem and mostly hurts when you bear weight on it. Meniscus tears generally hurt when you put weight on it, squat, twist, turn, rise from a chair or do stairs. Get an evaluation from an orthopaedic surgeon and let them help you get better. ...Read more

Can cause knee pain: High uric acid causes gout and can affect knee joints and other joints in our body. But the pain of goubt is not only on bending and putting pressure on it, but you will have pain even on rest ang even at nightwhen you are resting and since the symptoms are caused by deposition of small crystals made of uric acid ther is some swelling as well. Get it checked. Ptechiae are not related to high uric acid. ...Read more

Double check injury: Your knees are critical for weight bearing, and you need to see your physician to make sure you don't have any underlying trauma caused from the impact. Back of knee pain. When I put pressure on it there is a sharp pain in the back/middle of my knee. It also hurts to bend it. Is it just a sprain?

Maybe: It could be a strain, but could also be an injury to the articular cartilage (lining of the ends of the bone), meniscus (cartilage pad), or even a fracture. If your symptoms do not respond to rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory meds or is causing you severe limitations, see an orthopedic doctor for an evaluation. If he/she feels further testing is needed, an xray or MRI will be ordered. Good luck! ...Read more

Hi. I have knee pain after I bend my knee and then extend it, and it also hurts whenever I play sports. Or put to much pressure on it? What do I have?

Hard to say: There are many moving parts in the knee. If you have a lot of swelling, it may mean you tore the meniscus, the padding between the tibia and femur, or you might have torn a ligament. But it could also be a minor contusion (bruising). You will not know unless you see an orthopedic doctor who will do an exam and may or may not order an MRI which is the best way of seeing looking inside the knee. ...Read more

Left knee pain started 7 days ago after running. Dull ache, occasional sharp pain, hurts to put pressure around knee cap or on sides. Fairly constant ache last 4 days. Recommendations?

Be seen: There are so many possibilities that it is really hard to say without more history and the benefit of an exam. An avid runner is at risk for a stress fracture. Symptomatic chondromalacia at the patellofemoral joint, a meniscal tear, an inflammatory condition of the knee like chondrocalcinosis are all considerations. Consider being seen for an accurate diagnosis. ...Read more

I have knee pain when I bend, then extend, or when I play sport or put pressure. I can't move or put weight when I get that pain. The pain lasts for 5 min?

Needs evaluation: Knee pain is tricky especially if you are young and athletic. Although breaking bones can happen usually it is the soft structures like the cartilage, the ligaments, the tendons that can cause pain when bending and extending. I would suggest a face to face exam. Your doctor can then recommend the proper test which may include an X ray or an MRI. Good luck. ...Read more

Maybe: Maybe. Full exam needed if a contusion or sprain will improve but if it's a crucial or collateral ligament tear or meniscus tear may need more rehabilitation or surgery to fix. Tell MD where the pain is how long it lasts if it radiates. Do low impact elliptical or recumbent bike till pain improves please. Controlling your diet will definitely help in the long run. What is the cause of knee pain after spine surgery that went wrong &had to have to take hardware out for pressuring the nerve on l3l4. I'm only 39?

Maybe nerve related: This could be related to a couple things. 1st, after all that surgery, you could have some stenosis of the area where the nerves exit from the vertebrae, leading to pain, either from structural issues or scar tissue. If it does not feel like nerve pain, do you have any muscular weakness from these issues? It could be quad weakness leading to knee pain or change in gait causing arthritis. ...Read more

Lateral knee pain under patella & pressure within joint when bent for a long time no pain bearing weight heard loud pop when squatted once what is it?

Kneecap slippped: Please see my previous answers on patellofemoral pain/ subluxation. Your symptoms suggest your kneecap cartilage is causing you pain... When you squatted your patella (kneecap) subluxated transiently and 'reduced' spontaneously. That's the 'pop' you felt or heard. See your orthopedic surgeon for definitive diagnosis and treatment. Best of luck! ...Read more
