Back of knee pain. When I put pressure on it there is a sharp pain in the back/middle of my knee. It also hurts to bend it. Is it just a sprain?

Maybe: It could be a strain, but could also be an injury to the articular cartilage (lining of the ends of the bone), meniscus (cartilage pad), or even a fracture. If your symptoms do not respond to rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory meds or is causing you severe limitations, see an orthopedic doctor for an evaluation. If he/she feels further testing is needed, an xray or MRI will be ordered. Good luck! ...Read more

MRI: One must always be alert for meniscus injury or cruciate ligament tear depending on how the injury occurred. This will not be seen on X-ray or ultrasound. You should consider MRI. Workers compensation will consider the request as long as symptoms persist and other tests do not provide the answer. Speak to your doctor and best wishes. ...Read more

My knees hurt when I bend  down.  ( i.e., . to pick up something). What can be done about this?  Does glucosamine and hydrodyn really work?

Evidence Lacking: The use of glucosamine chondroitin is a very popular over the counter supplement that many people take for osteoarthritis. Research is mixed on its efficacy. Some research indicates that the glucosamine sulfate version may be the one that works. Often people look towards the more expensive combination of glucosamie and msm. It would be good to see an orthopedic physician. ...Read more

My knee hurts when I bend it should I go to er?

My knee hurts when I bend it should I go to er?

Not likely: If it just hurts when you bend it, a trip to the er is probably not necessary. If you dislocated it or had large amounts of redness and swelling and a fever, then yes. If it just hurts when you bend it or walk on it, I would recommend just waiting and seeing you primary care doc or going to urgent care doc tomorrow (both will be much cheaper and just as effective for this issue).I hope this helps! ...Read more

Since Tuesday, I've had horrible pain in both my knees. Hurts to walk, bend, stand. Even laying down, I have pain. No swelling. Help? Any ideas?

Have you considered: Seeing a doctor? Assuming you're an otherwise healthy 20-year-old and you're not a ballerina and/or haven't been training for a marathon, an ice-skating championship, or the Olympics, and haven't been trampled by a stampede of mad yaks anytime recently, "horrible pain" in both knees suggests a nontrivial medical problem that definitely warrants a medical evaluation. ...Read more

Squatted down quickly and felt/ heard pop above knee cap. Hurts to bend but can walk with some soreness. Pops every time bent above and below knee cap?

Kneecap subluxation: Sounds very much like patellar (kneecap) subluxation (slipping in and out) of place. I would suggest seeing a board certified ors for evaluation. Initial treatment often involves strengthening the quadriceps muscle and patellar bracing. This easy 'slipping' suggests generalized hyper mobility and can affect other joints. Best of luck! ...Read more
