NEVER go into pain. Exercise helps the moemtn of fluid in the joint, clenaing the cartilege of toxic products and bringing in nutrition. Just resting is not good for one. Why would pt use 2lb ankle weight for strengthening leg of a senior recovering from fracture? Hurts knee?
Ankle weights: My answer is that i wouldn't do any exercise that hurts. Pain is a sign that your body doesn't like this. I would reduce the weight (to 1 pound, or even 1/2 a pound) till i found a level of weight which allowed me to do the exercise without pain. Variable: The recovery time can vary from weeks to years. Chondromalacia implies long-term, often irreversible damage to the cartilage that covers the bone. However, symptoms can improve or even disappear. If your patella is not tracking properly, then I recommend a physical therapy program, patellar stabilizing brace and rest from activities that worsen symptoms. Ok: It should be fine as long as you start with low or even no resistance on the bike and exercise with comfort. If your knees are screaming at you during the exercise or if you have prolonged (greater than an hour) soreness after exercise, you are doing too much. Not likley: Either you are genetically destined to be bow legged or increasing wear along the inside of the knee with time is causing you to become bow-legged. Rarely a disease process could contibute to bowing of the legs. See an orthopedist for clarity in diagnosis. We generally show our patients how to work on gentle range of motion of their ankle and subtalar joint.
