Have Medial Meniscus tear w/ cyst wearing hinged knee brace but calf is very painful What should I do?
How helpful is brace: If the brace is the source of the calf pain, but helps the knee, then an adjustment to the brace (size, fit, etc.) could be considered. Alternatively, a new brace could be utilized. Personally, I don't routinely use braces for meniscal tears unless there is a ligament tear as well or associated arthritis with a misaligned knee. Rarely: The meniscus of the knee has for 90%+ no circulation and because of it little potential to heal. Unless the tear is small and very peripheral (where circulation is best) it will not heal on its own. Surgery is advised for tears that are causing locking of the knee. Some: A serious knee brace helps people with an unstable knee prevent further knee damage until surgery is done. For just the meniscus tear, some people are more comfortable in a brace, but it's not "helping" the problem. That being said, it's not hurting either. Hinged brace + PT: The best braces to decrease the chances of having instability episodes are hinged knee braces. Even with these braces, however, you may still experience instability. Your best bet to decrease these episodes is to begin a focused exercise protocol to strengthen your quadriceps, hamstrings, and hip abductor & adductor muscles.
