I have been taking Xanax (alprazolam) for several years because I have severe panic attacks. 1 mg 3x''s a day. I don't think it is working anymore. ?

Maybe not enough: Most likely the xanax (alprazolam) is still having some effect. Probably it is just not working well enough. Other treatments that are often helpful include serotonin antidepressants (sri's like prozac, zoloft, lexapro) and cognitive behavioral therapy. You should talk to your doctor. I keep on getting panic attacks, and Xanax (alprazolam) doesn't really help. What other benzodiazepine should I try that might help me? Thank you, please help!

Not a benzo: Better treatment for panic attacks would not be another benzodiazepine, but probably an ssri such as celexa, zoloft, or even prozac. Other antidepressants such as Effexor (venlafaxine) may prevent panic attacks also. Thought they can help when appropriately dosed, benzodiazepines are a temporary solution because tolerance may develop. Cognitive behavioral therapy is an important part of treatment also. ...Read more

What to do if I have been taking Xanax (alprazolam) for 3 weeks for panic attacks due to having to start. I was wondering if I would get any withdrawal symptoms?

How much, how often: The best ultimate treatment, long-term, for people with panic disorder is SSRI/SNRI antidepressants such as Zoloft, Celexa, Lexapro, Effexor (venlafaxine) and others. Benzos should be used only until those drugs kick in and/or for breakthrough symptoms. If you have been taking them every day at least 3 times a day for 3 weeks, there may be at least mild withdrawal. The best solution is to taper the Xanax slowly ...Read more

This anxiety and panic attacks are taking over my life. Does anyone know of self help ? Xanax (alprazolam) does not help it. I want to beat this on my own wo meds

Comprehensive Exam: Panic and anxiety are not due to panic disorder until other possibilities are carefully "ruled-out". It is vital you see a very competent psychiatrist for a comprehensive evaluation (history, exam, labs) before any diagnosis and treatment options are discussed. Medications can be helpful if it is panic disorder, and cognitive-behavior therapy is also helpful. Best wishes! ...Read more

Xanax (alprazolam) or celexa (citalopram) which is better for panic attacks and which has worse side effects or more addicting? Thank you!

It depends: Celexa is better for long-term treatment/prevention of recurring attacks, and actually works well (as do other ssris, like paxil, (paroxetine) prozac, etc.). Xanax, on the other hand, is better for acute attacks, to be taken when you're actually having an attack. It's better not to take it all the time if possible, as it is a controlled substance, and, thus, more addicting. ...Read more

I smoke weed but i experience panic attacks as side effect so i thought i could try to take a 0.25mg Xanax (alprazolam) before smoking..Is that safe?

Sort of but...: This is safe from the perspective that there is no direct interaction between cannabis ; xanax (alprazolam), (alprazolam) but xanax (alprazolam) has a long list of potential side effects ; can be habit-forming (i feel cannabis is actually a far safer medicine!). Consider natural anti-anxiety agents such as l-theanine, holy basil, 5-htp, passionflower, skullcap or valerian. One or more of these may work as well as xanax (alprazolam). See comment:. ...Read more
