Could a broken up kidney stone clog more holes and make the situation worse?

Could a broken up kidney stone clog more holes and make the situation worse?

Yes: If one has a large kidney stone and is broken up with surgery (laser, lithotripsy, etc.), the smaller fragments can drop into the kidney tube (ureter) and cause obstruction and pain. This can lead to another surgery if the stones are large or if there are many stones piled on top of each other in the ureter since they may not pass spontaneously. ...Read more

Kidney stone - what will happen if kidney stone left unremoved.Aside from pain would it cause kidney failure or other complications.?

Kidney stone - what will happen if kidney stone left unremoved.Aside from pain would it cause kidney failure or other complications.?

Kidney stone: It depends on where the stone is. If it ends up blocking the tube that leads out of the kidney or from the bladder, it can cause further pain and can lead to kidney disease (from obstruction). Some stones can cause scaring in the kidneys. Often stones will pass on their own with enough hydration if they are small enough. If not, they may need to be removed or broken up. ...Read more

My friend suffering from right kidney hydronephrosis-ii with dilated ureter, 10mm calculus almond shape in upper ureter , can it expel without surgery?

No, not likely: Stones greater than 5-6mm in the upper ureter are unlikely to pass without some sort of surgical intervention, be it extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy or laser lithotripsy with ureteroscopy +/- stent placement. A urologist can recommend the proper treatment to get your friend stone free and feeling better. ...Read more

Do eggs lead to kidney stone formation or worsen an already existing condition of kidney stone? What foods apart from salt should be avoided?

Here are some ...: Consuming eggs has been not known to have any negative impact onto urinary stone formation. Most patients with recurrent kidney stones are caused by genetic factors leading to poor urine dis-solubility, namely, low stone inhibiting activities, although some less than 15% of cases may re related with RTA, overactive parathyroid, medullary sponge kidneys, etc. So, ask Doc for more detail... ...Read more

Where to go urologist or nephrologist? Case for 5.5mm kidney stone non obstructive? Is it big or can pass by drinking water?

Stone in kidney: This size stone may pass on its own if you drink 4-5 liters of fluid per day. Be sure to include at least one quart of lemonade or lemon extract added to water. If you use ReaLemon extract, add 5 teaspoons to each quart of water you drink. This will help. Minimize salt. Minimize animal protein. Push the fluids daily. ...Read more

**SECOND OPINION** I hav Kidney stone in R Kidney. ER DR said It should hurt its n kidney not tubes or bladder. Can kidney stone hurt in the Kidney?

Depends, not usually: I've seen many silent (unknown to patient but seen on CT) stones in the kidney. They don't usually hurt till they fall into the ureter. However, if you have inflammation from an infected stone or the stone is causing local irritation, it may hurt. ...Read more

I have bilateral hydronephrosis with 4mm stone @ left VUJ n10mm@right upper ureter. Is it possible to do ESWL to break the stones w/out doing RPG n stent?

Depends on symptoms: 4mm stone should pass on its own. 10mm stone would likely break up with eswl, but primary stent placement might be required if severe right sided flank pain present. Metabolic stone evaluation necessary in view of bilateral stones. Probably have seen a urologist as ur aware of hydronephrosis & stone pathology. Certainly discuss with him/her. ...Read more

Punctate nonobstructing calcific fleck found on left kidney pelvis. I must control stone-mkg w/ Urocit-K. Will this fleck get bigger or pass?

Stone passable: If stone is described as punctate it is likely only a millimeter or two in diameter which makes it a good bet to pass if it moves into the kidney tube (ureter). If you are on Urocit K (potassium citrate) I assume that you have been diagnosed with a low citrate level and this medication supplements the level which can prevent certain calcium crystals from forming. Key is to have stone monitored, with good hydration ...Read more

Do zist in kidneys flush out like kidney stones?

Can you explain?: "zits" in the kidney? You won't get acne in your kidneys, but pustules can form in acute pyelonephritis, a medical emergency. In some cases, the kidneys actually do look like they have developed acne. Dr. Fowler reminds me you may mean "cysts" -- if there are only a few, they are almost always harmless. ...Read more

Is it possible for a kidney stone that breaks up to clog more holes and make the situation even more dangerous?

Is it possible for a kidney stone that breaks up to clog more holes and make the situation even more dangerous?

Not necessarily.: If a kidney stone breaks up, the smaller fragments are usually more likely to pass. The biggest worry is not that "more holes are clogged", but that the outflow tube of the kidney, called the ureter is blocked, preventing urine to pass. The fragments of very large stones can block the ureter, a condition called 'steinstrasse' after shockwave lithotripsy, limiting its use in very large stones. ...Read more
