High bun and bun/creatinine ratio results so bad kidneys?

High bun and bun/creatinine ratio results so bad kidneys?

Most of time: Generally high BUN and creatinine go hand in hand in bad kidneys(chronic kidney disease)., and bun/creat ratio is 10-15 to 1 , however if ratio >20 may indicate superimposed second cause like dehydration or bleeding in gut. ...Read more

Kidney (Definition)

The kidneys are paired organs that lie on either side of the vertebral column. Part of their critical functions include the excretion of urine and removal of nitrogenous wastes products from the blood. They regulate acid-base, electrolyte, fluid balance and blood pressure. Through hormonal signals, the kidneys control the ...Read more

I had one more quick question. If bun 25, creatinine 1.5, bun/creat ratio 17, egfr 58...The egfr means im in stage 3 CKD right? 58% kidney function?

I had one more quick question. If bun 25, creatinine 1.5, bun/creat ratio 17, egfr 58...The egfr means im in stage 3 CKD right? 58% kidney function?

Stage 3 CKD: You are correct in that your estimated GFR of 58 ml/min puts you into stage 3 chronic kidney disease. Remember, your GFR is estimated. The actual result may be greater, or lower, than the egfr. To get your acutal gfr, have a 24 hour urine for creatinine clearance. Ask the physician who orders this test to have proteinuria (p) assess in that sample. If p is present, it may needed to be treated. ...Read more

What creatinine levels indicate kidney problems?

What creatinine levels indicate kidney problems?

Varies: Although serum creatinine is routinely tested when blood chemistry is ordered, it is not a standardized test (i.e. different labs will give a slightly different numerical values & direct comparison of values from such labs is not meaningful). Frequently, normal serum creatinine ranges from 0.8 to 1.3 mg/dl. However, other factors such as degree of hydration and the muscle mass of the patient. ...Read more

Creatinine is elevated but egfr is normal. Kidney disease?

Maybe/depends,,,: If you are a big person with a normal egfr, and BUN, you might have a high Creatinine due to a lot of muscle mass. However, if you are small, and of light build, you could have an issue, and so a more extensive work up would be needed, including review of your meds, if you are taking any. Best of luck. ...Read more

Worried about protein in urine. Urea nitrogen 12 creatinine serum 0.6 eGFR 116.8 AST 20 alt 30 albumin 3.9 1+ blood and 1+ protein in urine. ?

Worried about protein in urine. Urea nitrogen 12 creatinine serum 0.6 eGFR 116.8 AST 20 alt 30 albumin 3.9 1+ blood and 1+ protein in urine. ?

Stop worrying: 1+ protein in the urine is seldom a sign of anything at all. Most often, it's from standing up. Some folks lose protein during the day, but if you empty your bladder before you go to sleep and then check your urine in the morning, it's protein-free. Ask your physician about this. However, I am MUCH more concerend about the blood. This needs a workup especially if it's not lifelong. ...Read more

3 mm calculi: Yes, calculus is one stone; calculi are multiple stones; they are small if all are 3 mm or less; multiple 3 mm stones requires determination of cause; if not done, you require 24 hour urine testing for chemical analysis; and blood testing. Caldium oxsalte. Kidney stone removal?

Kidney stones: Treatment options for calcium oxylate stones are dictated by the size, location and density of the stone. Eswl (shock wave lithotripsy) is often effective for small to moderate size stones in the kidney or upper ureter. Large stones in the kidney may require pcnl (keyhole surgery with scope through the back). Stones in the lower ureter often require ureteroscopic extraction. ...Read more

I have creatinine serum of 1.64, bun 15 and bun to creatinine ratio of 9. An ultrasound of the kidneys revealed no stones or blockage. Is kidney damage confirmed?

Need more info: A 24 hr urine collection to calculate creatinine clearance would be most accurate in this situation. A level of 1.6 implies a possible decrease in kidney function, but creatinine alone is insufficient to determine absolute renal function. Age, sex, race and muscle mass can have an effect on creatinine. A nephrologist can monitor this and give guidance as to how to preserve remaining function. ...Read more

Do high creatinine levels mean renal failure?

Do high creatinine levels mean renal failure?

High creatinine: Serum c is dependent on the person's weight, race and age. You need to have a 24 hour urine collection for a creatinine (c) clearance determination to know what your renal function is. When the urine is returned, blood is taken for a c level. That is the sure way to know how serious your creatinine level is and what your true renal function is. ...Read more
