What exactly is a CSF culture & what is its purpose? Is it difficult to perform and does it take longer than blood cultures for a result to come back?

Similar to blood: A CSF culture is when you take a sample of CSF (usually from a lumbar puncture which samples the CSF from the spinal canal in the lower back - so yes a bit more difficult to perform but still pretty routine) and culture it to see if there are bacteria (or sometimes viruses) growing in it, usually to look for meningitis. What is the most likely cause of protein and ketones in urine, egfr of 78%, negative cultures and normal blood results.

How much?: Miss a meal and you'll have +1 ketones in your urine. Many people have trace proteinuria and this is okay. You may also have orthostatic proteinuria caused by standing up -- some people are like this -- and this is easily ruled in or out by checking your first-voided urine in the morning. Forget "most likely"; you do need to have the cause found. Best wishes. ...Read more

No: Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder caused by your body attacking the cells in your pancreas that produce insulin. It has nothing to do with your diet. Much more likely related to some type of infection that led to an immune response by your body that went awry, leading to the antibodies attacking your poor pancreas and leaving it non-functional. Trace ketones: in urine may be useful in determining hydration which may have involve many benign or serious causes. Would recommend blood tests to diagnose more serious concerns like Diabetes Mellitus Type 1. In the near future we will also routinely check Genetic factors to determine the likelihood of developing disease in the future, even without signs/symptoms. ...Read more
