LDH: Is LDH of 497 hi? Ask you lab for normal values as there is not international reference standard for this test and different Labs will have different normal values. So never ask us about a lab test without giving us the normal values 4 any test. ...Read more

What exactly is glycose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase?

What exactly is glycose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase?

Carbohydrate enzyme: Glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (g6pd deficiency) is an inherited disorder found mostly in people with african, asian, or middle eastern ancestry. G6pd helps convert carbohydrates into a more useful form. Lack of this enzyme causes red blood cells to become fragile, resulting in the rbcs bursting when stressed. This leads to hemolytic anemia. Infection, drugs & some foods can trigger. ...Read more

Whats pyruvate dehydrogenase complex?

Whats pyruvate dehydrogenase complex?

Enzymes: Pyruvate dehydrogenase complex is a complex of three enzymes in the mitichondria that change the Amino Acid pyruvate into the molecule acetyl-coa by a process called pyruvate decarboxylation. Acetyl-coa is used in the citric acid cycle to make energy for cells the complex links the metabolic pathway that breaks down glucose (elemental sugar) to the citric acid cycle. ...Read more

Could you die from pyruvate dehydrogenase complex?

Could you die from pyruvate dehydrogenase complex?

Odd question!: Hi. Pyruvate dehydrogenase is a vital step in intermediary metabolism! Do you mean could you die if one of the genes in the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex produced a non-functional enzyme? Don't know about heterozygotes; they might be OK. Homozygous mutant would be an embryonic lethal, I am sure. I'm really curious what led you to ask that bizarre question! ...Read more

Due to lactic acid: Pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency is characterized by the buildup of a chemical called lactic acid in the body Too much lactic acid can cause nausea, vomiting, heart and breathing problems. Acids in the blood interfere with the normal function of the body and that causes the symptoms Here is a helpful link http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition/pyruvate-dehydrogenase-deficiency ...Read more

Lactate Dehydrogenase level 120 IU/L, doctor said normal range 135-214. Is this something i should look into or just leave? Many Thanks

Leave it alone.: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, your result is in the normal range. LD can go up with just exercise. So it is prudent to follow your doctor's advice. ...Read more
