10 days keflex for strep b group uti, still symtomatic and lukocytes in urine (bladder pressure/freq urinate/back pain), now on cipro, (ciprofloxacin) what's going on?
Cystitis: You need to see a urologist and be fully evaluated. Sounds as if you may have upper urinary tract infection, in which case evaluation for some anatomic abnormality may be warranted, along with a careful assessment of the antibiotic therapy. Grp b strep should be quite sensitive to penicillin derivatives. Keflex levels may not be sufficient to deal with this. See a urologist. ...Read more
On second antibiotic for UTI. Keflex and now Cipro (ciprofloxacin). Still have symptoms. I am on plaquenil and methotrexate for SLE. Should I temporarily stop meds?
Check with doc first: The bacteria that cause UTI often are resistant to many antibiotics. It is possible but unusual for a UTI to resist both cephalexin (Keflex) and ciprofloxacin, so maybe UTI, maybe not. A vaginal yeast infection triggered by the antibiotics could cause UTI-like symptoms. Don't stop treatment yet, but speak with the doctor who prescribed it about next steps. ...Read more

Hi there. Is ok to combine cephalexin and ciproflaxin for a uti? I had cephalexin but it is expired I think, but I have a bottle of ciiproflaxin that isn't. I already took a tablet of the expired one, is ok to take the cipro?
Yes and No: no significant interactions. Cephalexin is not the best UTI drug anyways. However, antibiotics are prescribed for previous infectious condition. I don't generally recommend taking old prescription drug for a new condition. But yes they can be taken together unless you are taking other medication that may interact with cipro (ciprofloxacin) (like warfarin) or heart problem like QTc prolongation. ...Read more

No: Both antibiotics are effective bactericidal drugs. Keflex causes time dependent killing while Cipro (ciprofloxacin) causes concentration dependent killing. The 2 drugs have different antibacterial spectrums. In general Cipro (ciprofloxacin) has better activity against gram negative bacteria like pseudomonas while Keflex is moe active against gram positive bacteria like staph. And strep. Species. ...Read more

You bet: Get reevaluated. WHAT IS THE DIAGNOSIS???? We do not treat cellulitis with Unna boot. We do not treat stasis dermatitis with antibiotics. We do not treat phlebitis with either of these. Ruptured long plantaris muscle and erythromalalgia are treated in yet other ways. GET ANOTHER OPINION. Usually the best for this is a dermatologist. ...Read more
