Keflex Vs Amoxicillin
I used to take amoxicillin, then my doctor gave me keflex. I ended up being very allergic to keflex, how am I allergic to one but not the other?
Amox or Penicillin?: Both are commonly prescribed effective antibiotics but it won't matter which one you take as without appropriate dental treatment to remove the cause of the infection, you won't resolve the problem. This requires professional dental treatment. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Im allergic to amoxicillin can i take keflex 500 mg, from what my mom says all that happens if i take amoxicillin is i get a rash but i dont k ow if t?
Most people can: Studies have found a low incidence of cephalosporin (of which Keflex is one) allergy among penicillin allergic people. The rash from amoxicillin is also mediated by immune mechanism other than IgE. Thus your risk for an allergic reaction is likely no higher than someone who has never had an reaction to amoxicillin. ...Read more

What to do if I have strept throat, and im allergic to penicillin, can take amoxicillin or keflex instead?
No : Amoxicillin is within penicillin class and the risk of having a reaction is significant so it should be avoided. There is controversy about the risk of cross reaction between class of antibiotics penicillin and cephalosporin (keflex). It appears the risk is low (but not 0). If penicillin allergy was years ago, skin testing for penicillin can help know if it is still there. Allergist can help. ...Read more

Hope you feel better soon! ...Read more
Unlikely: Amoxicillin is in the penicillin family; Keflex is a cephalosporin. Only about 10% of penicillin-allergic people react to cephalosporins, so it is generally ok to take a cephalosporin unless there has been a life-threatening allergic reaction to a penicillin. You should discuss with your physician whether a cephalosporin is appropriate for you. ...Read more
So I had a UTI. amoxicillin 10 days. Didn't work. Went to ER bc of lots of blood & kidney pain. Now 6 days on cephalexin. When does back pain go away?
Kidney stone: If you are having ongoing pain 6 days into your second antibiotic, either the bacteria is resistant to keflex, or you have a second issue going on as well like a kidney stone that could cause the blood in your urine and the pain. If kidney stones were not excluded in your prior evaluations, they should be looked for. Have your doctor check the culture results from your previous visits. ...Read more
