Karo Syrup Substitute
Myo clinic Recomend: Don't treat infant constipation with corn (karo) syrup. Dark corn syrup was once a common home remedy for infant constipation. However, today's commercially prepared dark corn syrup might not contain the type of chemical structure that draws fluid into the intestine and softens stool. This makes dark corn syrup ineffective for infant constipation. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
5w baby cries in pain trying to push for a bm. Formula changed from soy to gentlease 3days ago. Fleet Suppository and Karo syrup=no help. No BM +pain?
Constipation: Soy formulas are usually more constipating that others. It can take up to two weeks after a formula change for the results to be known, so rapid formula changes is best avoided. A common trial sequence is: cows milk based, lactose-free, soy, elemental. In the meantime, take a rectal temp to stimulate the anus to relax. Blood, vomiting, poor feeding & irritability are emergencies. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
I gave my month old karo syrup for constipation and tried a cotton swab but he still hasn't went, what else could I do?
Constipation: First of all quit giving him Karo syrup as there is a risk of infant botulism with this. Secondly some babies may normally go this long without a BM. Some go everyday or multiple times a day. If he is acting well, eating and sleeping well, urinating well and his tummy is soft, then he is fine. If not go see his pediatrician for an exam and tips for dealing with this. ...Read more

Constipation infant: For infants who have not started solid foods, acute constipation can be treated by adding undigestible, osmotically active carbohydrates to formula and titrate the dose to induce a daily bowel movement. Add sorbitol-containing juices (eg, apple, prune, or pear). Some dark syryup brands may or may not contain the glycoproteins to be effective. Glycerin suppositories should be used infrequently. ...Read more
Scared of possibility of botulism in Karo syrup. What can I give 5 weeks baby for constipation and pain trying? She sleeps, feeds, and pees fine.
My almost 3 week old is having trouble pooping. She screams and turns red and nothing comes out. She is on enfamil gentlease. Tried karo syrup nothing?
Gas or constipated: Sometimes what we think is having trouble pooping in young babies is actually gas. When was the last time she pooped and was it soft or hard pebbles? You can add dark karo syrup 1 tsp to every other 4 ounce bottle to loosen stool up not to make it come out. If her stool comes out soft when she does go, you might want to try some simethicone drops 0.3 ml before she eats to help with the gas. ...Read more

Other Sx ???: The breast fed baby can have a small smear of poo every feeding or a giant crib filler poo every 7-10 days & be normal. If all of babies stools have been soft to this point & baby is otherwise behaving normally, i wouldn't do much other than wait for the inevitable poo. I baby has dropped his/her feeding activity & changes play patterns, an exam may be indicated. Call the office & check with dr. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
