Is it really constip: It is important to know that newborns (that is up to one month of age) can have a bowel movement anywhere between 12 times a day to once a week and not be constipated. As long as they are comfortable, stool is soft and feeding well. If it is really constipation, then you might incorporate small amount of water into the diet. In severe cases your doctor might need to look for underlying problems. ...Read more
Define & use natural: If your baby is having firm stools that are hard to pass, I accept the label. If breast fed, stooling less often& skipping days I would leave it alone if still soft. Bf infants can stool a little every feed or a crib full once a week. Bottle fed kids are expected to go daily. I've had success with undiluted prune or apple juice, 1oz once or twice daily. What could be the cause of my newborns constipation, frequent spit-up, refusal to eat and blood in stool after supository?
Several Reasons: By the time the baby goes home from the hospital we like to see several meconium stools daily. In the first week of life constipation can be related to relative dehydration in anticipation of mom's milk coming in. There are other more rare causes that are associated with abdominal distension, so that is a symptom to watch for. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Newborn strains to poo but not constipated, normal poo. To a point where he starts crying. Also grunts alot at night bedtime. Is this normal? Thank you
Normal: Newborns can make a lot of funny noises, including grunting, especially with gas. Having a BM can be a lot of work for a little one-- weak abdominal muscles, lying flat...so you can help him--put him in a sitting position (gravity), pull his legs up (imagine yourself trying to poo lying flat with very weak abs!) Rub his tummy, and a warm bath might help. If not better, see your pediatrician! ...Read more
