How does Dr. K know for certain that all these bites people describe as spider bites are MRSA if he hasn't cultured them or preformed a gram stain?
MRSA: Because there is an epidemic happening in the world. MRSA lesions are abscesses. Sitting at home with an abscess is unwise. MRSA has an appearance that is classic. And this classic appearance is described nearly identically by patients in my office, by email, online, and by the phone. Regular skin cellulitis or staph is not described as bites. Go to the doctor. Let them examine and test you. ...Read more
I'm on amox tr k clv for a UTI because I can't take a lot of meds. Is there anything else that would be more effective?
Depends upon "bug": Also upon which meds you can take. But, antibiotics are the only sure way of eliminating a UTI in spite of unscientific claims of herbalists and naturopaths. However drinking lots of water and urinating evry couple of hours can help to get rid of a UTI sooner. Taking sodium bicarbonate, in tablet form or in a drink, will reduce urinary acidity & help to relieve symptom of burning. ...Read more

Take care: Cat, Zispin and Lexapro (escitalopram) both work partially by stopping Seratonin uptake. I am on low dose aspirin for MTHFR. Should I avoid prenatals with vitamin K since it works to clot the blood?
Vitamin K is ESSENTIAL for good health and your baby could have bleeding problems if you are deficient. While lack of Vit K increases bleeding, taking Vit K does NOT increase risk of clots. See http://bit. Ly/1nzsOh0 for more on K.
You should be taking the L-5-MTHF form of folate (folic acid).

Depends.: I am assuming you are talking about the half life of a drug. A drug with a 25 hours half life means that after 25 hours, the blood concentration of the drug will be halved. So at hour zero it's 100%. At 25 hours, the concentration is 50%. At 50 hours, it's 25%. At 75 hours, it's 12.5% etc. Please note that using half lives is an oversimplification and doesn't always correlate with drug effect. ...Read more
My orthopaedic said I have some arthritus in my knees, is it o.K to wear a neoprene sleeve over my knees.?
Yes: It is okay, but will most likely not do much for the arthritis. If you have just minimal arthritis, and you feel it is giving you a little extra support, then definitely do what ever feels better. However, make sure to give your knees some breaks and do not get to the point where you depend on the sleeves. Try hamstring stretches and quad strengthening as well. Best of luck! ...Read more

Fine yes: You have staples on the skin. You had a laparotomy. The staples are used to hold the skin together until the skin edged start to heal. Why do I feel as though my lower gastrointestinal is all inflammed and have pain to do a motion that leaves me bed ridden for hours. I'm on and off toilet for hours and the pain is bad. Happens at least once a week?
Is it possible to have a heart attack without any warning signs? Symptoms of heart attack (dizziness, anxiety, cough, fainting, etc) are very similar to other conditions, how can I figure out if those are signs of heart attack?
Chest pressure, shortness of breath, nausea, and sweating are the most common symptoms of a heart attack. Some people will describe it as feeling like indigestion, or may have aching in the arms, jaw, shoulder, or upper back.
The likelihood of a heart attack increases as the number of symptoms increase, and the probability is also higher in someone over the age of forty. These symptoms are also more worrisome in people who smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease. However, it is quite possible to have a heart attack with few or mild symptoms, and while less common, they can occur in people under the age of forty.
Unfortunately, many other conditions can produce symptoms that are similar or identical to a heart attack, including heartburn, panic attacks, collapsed lungs, and pulmonary embolism.
It may be impossible to distinguish a heart attack from other conditions without testing, even for a seasoned physician. For this reason, you should seek care immediately if these symptoms occur. Unexplained fainting should always be checked out promptly. Similarly, chest discomfort or difficulty breathing that lasts more than 10-15 minutes is grounds for going to the nearest emergency room. ...Read more
I had sex 2 weeks ago on the day of my period. Now I am spotting does it mean I'm pregnant or could it be hormonal changes. Also that was my first time having sex and we used a condom but I know condoms can break
If you had sex while on your period, your chances of pregnancy are pretty low, especially if you used a condom. The spotting could be from your hymen being torn during sex. This spotting should resolve in 1-2 weeks. Also now is a great time to see your doctor to discuss all your birth control options, as well as condom use to protect against std's.
Take care. ...Read more
I am in the first trimester of my pregnancy. My obstetriciansent me to the ER for headaches. They performed a CT scan. They shielded my front and back. I am worried that I shouldn't have let them do it. Is there a risk?
Concern about: Possible effects of high dose ionizing radiation exposure should not prevent medically indicated diagnostic x-ray procedures from being performed. When possible other diagnostic procedure should be considered like MRI (not associated with adverse fetal effects). If the shielding was done properly most probably everything will be ok. Risk of carcinogenesis very low. Talk to your OB next visit. ...Read more
Risk of B12 shots: No. Except it is an injection and may cause some pain. Vitamin b 12 is a water soluble vitamin, which means if you have enough in your body the excess will pass in the urine. It can also be given in oral form, but absorption is unpredictable, and nasal spray which is comparable to shots but costs more.
