Does lip augmentation ever cause scarring? Is there a risk of permanent scarring after lip augmentation? .
Can my own fat be used for lip augmentation? I'm worried about synthetic fillers and how I might react. Can I use my own fat for lip augmentation? How is that done? .
Fat grafting can be used to fill facial wrinkles or restore volume. Fat grafting to the lips was more popular before the newer hyaluronic acid (ha) filler became available. Once the fat graft takes, it can provide several years of lip augmentation the problem with fat is that it is not as predictable as the current off the shelf fillers. Sometimes it all takes, sometimes only half survives. So be prepared for multiple procedures to get your "final" result. There is much more swelling after fat grafting, and occasionally hard will develop.
Ha is normally found in the skin and joints, so there is no allergy to it. If you have never had lip augmentation with a filler, you might consider trying an ha like Restylane (dermal fillers) or juvederm first, to get an idea of how much volume is enough.
For longer lasting lip augmentation I prefer dermal drafts over fat grafts. They are a little more work to prepare, but the results are more predictable, and there are fewer problems with lumps forming. Are there any products that can be injected to reduce or modify lip augmentation? I am concerned about the lip augmentation procedure failing to produce the expected results. Can it be reversed if necessary? If not, how long will it take to fade?
Lip: Lip augmentation with an injectable is most commonly done with a hyaluronic acid product such as juvederm. The result typically lasts for 9-12 months. It can be reversed to some degree with an injection of hyaluronidase which will dissolve the product--however this is almost as expensive as the juvederm. A well trained facial plastic surgeon will augment your lips very conservatively in order to avoid an overfilled, fake look. The best lip augmentations are the ones you don't even know are injected. Many options.: The simplest option is an injectable hyaluronic acid filler. These will last around a year. For possible longer-term effects, consider fat grafting but this is less predictable as the fat may not survive the transfer and because of the use of larger needles, there tends to be more swelling. For longer term/larger lips, implants of gortex or silicone can be placed but may feel firm or be extruded. ...Read more
