How long before a night guard for bruxism can reduce jaw pain? My dentist had a night guard made for me to stop my bruxism and jaw pain a week ago, but i still have jaw pain when I wake up in the morning. How long does it take for the pain to go away?
Should be better: My patients typically see improvements within 24 hours. If they don't I start thinking about changing the appliance, is my patient really bruxing, and other alternatives. I am assuming you have the correct design because only 2 out of over 100 designs reduce clenching and the others have no effect or increase bruxing. ...Read more
My husband had a filling done about 3 weeks ago and since has been suffering jaw pain. Is there any explanation for this?
Jaw joint?: Sometimes the jaw joint can become injured during dental procedures. By having the mouth open very widely the muscles around the jaw can be stretched and tear leading to pain and discomfort. He should use anti-inflammatory medicines, ice 20 minutes 3 to 4 times a day on the area that hurts and a strictly soft diet. He also needs to contact his dentist for an exam. ...Read more
I have chronic neck and jaw pain on left side. Every few weeks I get really anxious for no reason and the pain flares up. How do I make it calm down?
Can Lexapro (escitalopram) cause lasting jaw pain? I had a bad reaction to my first and only dose a week ago which included jaw quivering and my jaw has hurt since.
SSRIs and clenching: SSRI's SNRI's take some time for the body to acclimate. Generally, your MD starts you at a low dose and works you up to a therapeutic dose. Some side effects can be nervousness and jaw clenching. One possibility is that this has created a spasm in the muscles that close the jaw. Check with your MD about side effects and have your dentist examine you if jaw pain persists. ...Read more

I have woken with severe right sided jaw pain. Had the same 2 weeks ago. Can't tell whether it is upper or lower.
Question ?: If you are asking what might be the cause, there are a number of possibilities, including sinus issues, TMJ, periodontal disease, bruxism, and a tooth issue. TMJ problem...: Your symptoms point to TMJ problem. You may have the problem prior to the appt. But it has not surfaced yet and during the root canal treatment you must open your mouth wide for a long time. This can trigger the symptoms. You can use hot and cold moist facial towels intermittenly applied at the joint area. Longer (around 30 sec.) with the heat vs. 10 sec. Cold. Contact your dentist. ...Read more
22y male, left neck and left shoulder stiffness; left jaw pain. It's been weeks close to 2 months. Have not exercised for a more than 2 months. Dx?
Depends: The problem could be in the neck, the structures between the neck and shoulder or the shoulder itself. If the discomfort is worse turning your head to the right, it suggests muscle type problem in the neck rather than a pinched nerve coming out of the neck. If shoulder motion is very uncomfortable or limited it suggests problems(? Bursitis) there. The jaw discomfort may be unrelated. See your md. ...Read more

TMJ strain maybe: Your jaw joins to your skull by a joint called the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) Muscles move your jaw. Just like any other joint you can sprain or strain it. I have been having jaw pain for 2 weeks. I've already been seen several times but it got worse when a dislocation occurred. How can I get urgent treatment. Went to ER and they refused to do anything.
Proper Care: I would recommend that you start with your primary care doctor to help narrow down the cause(s) of the pain. Another option would be an ENT. The ER docs are looking to screen for conditions that need immediate workup and treatment. An urgent care facility will function largely the same way. Your PCP should point you in the right direction in order to get to the root cause of your pain. Good luck ...Read more
