May be sensitive: If your jaw muscles are irritated from doing a lot of chewing (gum, for example) or from clenching or grinding your teeth, yawning can overstimulate the muscles causing a spasm. TMJ exercises: Try putting your tongue on the roof of your mouth, opening your mouth wide with your tongue in place, and breathing in slowly for two counts, and out slowly for two counts.
