Yes: Hi. Metformin and sitagliptin work via different mechanisms, and together are synergistic. So yes, more effective than one drug alone. Note even the combination may not be adequate for achieving tight control. Your doctor will follow your A1c response, and if it's in the mid-low 6's, you're good to go. A nice thing is Janumet (sitagliptin and metformin) by itself cannot cause hypoglycemia. Good luck! ...Read more

No. Need Insulin: Type 1 diabetes is a complete lack of Insulin thus Insulin must be given for survival. Symlin (pramlintide) is another injection that can be used with Insulin to treat type 1 diabetes. Amaryl+janumet and other oral medications are indicated for type 2 diabetes (insulin resistance). Safe, however...: ... you should only take with regular monitoring by your doctor. Janumet (sitagliptin and metformin) is a combo-drug formed by adding sitagliptin (aka, Januvia) and metformin, hence the combo brand name (and combo price tag). It has a BLACK BOX WARNING for potential lactic acidosis which can occur due to metformin accumulation. This is rare, but fatal in 50% of cases, esp. In diabetics w/ kidney disease. Diabetic: First of all you most likely have type 2 diabetes. If so you are not a diabetic - you have diabetes - and you should be working for the next several years to rid yourself of diabetes.
Diet, exercise, and decreasing medication doses for management of diabetes if where you should be.
